Title: What are legs?
Post by: brushvalleybrewer on August 27, 2010, 07:35:02 PM
I suppose if a beer can have head, it can have legs, but I don't know what they are.  :-[

When somebody says a beer has legs, what do they mean?

That it wants to walk out of the glass?

Actually, it's a term carried over from the wine world. When you swirl and sip a wine, you'll notice that wines with more body and that are bigger (typically with more residual sugar and alcohol) will run back down the side of glass in streaks that look like stalactites. Those are legs.

Drips down the inside of the glass, typically from big beers.

So, liquid, not foam? Foam would be lacing?

exactly... The foam that sticks like a spiderweb to the side of a glass is the lace or Belgian lace if you want to be nationalistic about it. :)

Run some bourbon or scotch around in a glass for an example.  That will be close.

Legs are fine but you know you have a really interesting beer when it has breasts.

If my beer had legs like those, I'd marry it!

I thought legs are the things you don't feel when you stand up after one too many tripels?

You cant have just one beer, because you have two legs. Then there are your arms.
