Title: Club Sponsored Competitions
Post by: Jeff Zesch on October 26, 2021, 07:17:51 am
For those clubs that host competitions,  do you guys generally make a profit from them?  Are competitions a good fund raising device for the club?

I've run a small competition for my club (less than 40 entries) and the answer is no. It depends on how you're managing your costs, but with the typical $7 entry fee costs add up pretty quickly. We hold it at a brewery, usually starting a bit before they open to the public, so I like to throw some cash to the servers for their help and time. Even if we're cleaning up after ourselves they're still helping us with something.

If we get ~30 entries  we're making about $30, which disappears pretty quickly if I've underestimated some of the costs. If you save some of the consumables (unused cups, pencils) and can host the competition software yourself then maybe you can cut the costs down and make a hundred bucks. It's not really why we do it as a club though, and I'd rather take that money and put it into judging/sensory education for the club. When you start getting bigger than you need to start worrying about where you're going to store all the beer as people drop it off as well.

I know clubs that make huge amounts of money from running comps.  There are others that don't. It just depends on how you set up and run your comp.

The competitions I am  familiar with make money, but they are in the 200-400 entry range. $7 is at the low end of entry price. Generally, there are medals given away and often a light breakfast and lunch is served because the competition is an all day thingy. So yes you can make money and maybe even a decent amount, but costs have to be monitored.

For the competition run by my club, from what we don't get from sponsorships, people are donating their own money to make the competition happen.  We only charge $5 per entry.  We're not in it for the money.  I wish more competitions were like this.

That being said, I've mentioned that charging only $5 per entry is pretty stupid.  I think we'll raise to $7 next year (FINALLY!).
