Title: Denny's Mash Tun
Post by: bendbrew on October 21, 2010, 03:13:59 PM
I had a large group brew at the house a couple of weeks ago.  As a result, a couple of neighbors have decided to get into the hobby.  We have decided to build Denny's mash tun.  My question is this:  since we are going to be using a coleman Xtreme 70qt cooler and focus on 10 gallon batches, we want to make sure that the stainless steel braid can hold up to the pressure of 25 to 34 lbs of grain (and the strike water).  Any concerns?

Thanks.

Nope.  I've used that much with mine more than once.

If you're really worried just grab a length of copper wire, coil it around a pencil or something, and insert it into the braid.  In addition to providing additional support, it also adds weight so the braid doesn't float up like some folks have complained about.

Oh, I thought this was going to be a joke.

"Denny's mash tun is so old that it made the beer for the first bacchanal!"

Nevermind... carry on with these "beer-related topics" of yours.

Thanks Denny and hokerer.  I want to make the transition into the hobby as easy as possible for my buddies.  This looks like the way to go.

And, they don't need a bung with the Coleman 70qt. The tubing fits the drain perfectly if you buy 1/2" OD 3/8" ID.

Just make sure you get the blue one.

I love this setup.  I actually just cut my braid because it was too long...works great.

These are the instructions that I used: http://brewing.lustreking.com/gear/mashtun.html

I've brewed 12gal batches numerous times with the ss braid.  I put a 3/4" ball valve on my cooler, and the runoff is fast.

My efficiency jumped 10% when I switched to a blue cooler.
