Title: Watcha get for Christmas?
Post by: gmac on December 26, 2010, 04:20:32 PM
So, anyone else get homebrewing stuff for Christmas?

I got "Designing Great Beers" by Ray Daniels and a subscription to BYO.

What did you get (things you bought yourself for Christmas are perfectly fine...)?

My wife doesn't know it yet but I'm getting a new 20lb CO2 cylinder.  She gave me a remote read smoking thermometer and a Kindle.  Along with the parts bin rack I received it was a very good Christmas.

Supposed I'm getting a set of a large and then small bottle rack.  Supposed to hold up to 300 bottles.  Finally the beer is going to get out boxes sitting on the ground and get organized!

I got a poster, "Keep Calm and Have A Beer" and also two bronze plaque-type things, one that says "no drinking aboard (without the captain)" and "real ale served here."

Also, I left my wort chiller (a spiral-y stainless steel jobbie) -outside- and -full of water- so... I need to buy a new one, or figure out how to bend the SS back to the proper shape.

Got an nice NB gift cert (placed order this morning) and a new to me  40cu/ft oxygen tank.   Going to get that filled today and get a oxygen regulator and put my micron stone to work.  No more of those mini bottles for $7 a pop.

Haven't broken it in yet. I am out of malt!

I plumb wore out my old Barley Crusher. What a fine service it gave me over the years. To replace it Moonbeam gave me this! I won't be motorizing it. I'll be using my trusty HoleShooter that I built three houses with. It has always worked just fine.

My inlaws gave me these (http://www.brewballstore.com/cgi-bin/image/templates/BrewBallsPackage3.jpg).  I need to figure out how I'll use them since I use buckets.  It was a very thoughtful gift, and am grateful for such nice inlaws.

Wow, those are super neat! I've never seen anything like that before - I guess they're basically weighted ping pong balls? I would worry about contamination though, if they're not made of the right kind of plastic.

my sister told me i was getting something very cool....  at first, she thought it was a car, based on a joke my mom made to her. then it was something "almost as cool as a car", so i'm thinking some automated brewing system, sabco or something....  ended up with this....

I guess if you use it to measure boil times, it would count as beer related.  Very nice.  I don't have a sister but if I did, I'm sure she wouldn't love me that much.

A bag of assorted beers I can't get here from my son.  My wife got me my big assed grill/smoker which may not be completely homebrew related but I have pecan smoked 10 pounds of malt for some upcoming rauchbiers.  Tomorrow I'll smoke 10 more pounds with applewood.

A really nice new 14" carbon steel wok. (plus some other stuff).  I've been seasoning my new wok for the last few nights while SWMBO and son are on the mainland.  I really like this new addition to my kitchen.  My old wok was a pos.

I got enough cash to get my MM3 with enough to kick more back to family projects.  In-Laws got me two beer travel books.  Indiana now has two brewery tour guides.  One published in 2009 and one in 2010.  A quick look through doesn't show significant differences in what they've covered.  They're both missing a number of breweries that have opened just this year, but that's to be expected.  I'm amazed that they found these, actually,  Oh, and they got me an unstated amount of whiskey soaked oak chips from their LHBS.  No clue how much or what the oak is like.  She left them at home and I'll get them when we see them next.

I still have an IOU from my in-Laws on a used port barrel.  We're waiting to move before taking that project on.

EDIT to add: Those books?  Both published in 2010.  June 15th and July 9.

Yes a very cool present. I love mine- it's over 30 years old and still works. And the unscrewing part freaked me out at first. ;)
