Title: Moment to introduce myself
Post by: hio3791 on December 28, 2010, 05:39:19 PM
Hi everyone, my name is Javier.  I've been brewing for around 7 years.  I made the switch to AG about 2 months ago.  I actually spend quite a bit of time on the Northern Brewer forum, although I do a lot more reading than posting.  Through that forum, I discovered this one.

Look forward to continue learning and improving my process.
Thanks!

Welcome Javier.  I think you'll find this place a pretty good source of help/info and just plain old good comraderie.

Welcome Javier.

How is the AG brewing going after 2 months?

My AG setup is as ghetto as it gets.  I converted an existing cooler into a mash tun.  Simply bought a vinyl hose, SS braid, clamps and a tee.  I squeezed the vinyl hose through the cooler's water drain, attached it to the tee and attached the braid to the tee.  To stop the wort flow, I simply raise the hose and clamp it to the cooler's handle.  I use the tail gate of my truck as my brew stand.  I only have one brew pot so I have to juggle a bucket to hold hot water.  I keep the turkey fryer away from the truck and carry the pot/bucket back and forth.

With 2 AG batches under my belt and a third coming up, I may start to invest in the system.  Would like to get another brew pot and build some kind of stand.

As for the beer, it has certainly improved in flavor.  I am not going to bash extract brewing because I do believe you can brew excellent beers with extract ingredients but in my case, I believe my beer did improve with the process change.

As for going to AG as a whole, it has given me a greater appreciation for the hobby.  It's something I wish I had done sooner.  It really isn't that much more difficult than extract brewing.

Nothing "ghetto" about that setup.  That's almost exactly how I roll even down to the "no valve, just raise the hose".
That's an ideal setup in my estimation.

Welcome Javier!
Just had lunch yesterday in Manassas. Nice Italian place, Panino? Today we're in Lexington, KY. Tomorrow MO.

Panino is correct.  Wife likes us to go there for special occasions.

I think you made a good choice in choosing this board. I was told the other day by a beer shop owner that all of the English-language homebrewing forums are filled with condescension. I told him that the AHA board has none of that, and he seemed interested in joining. Everybody here is great - I think you'll enjoy it. Cheers!

Yup... The mods here run a tight ship and no one seems to take themselves too serious.
