Title: How much did you brew in 2010?
Post by: Thirsty_Monk on January 02, 2011, 02:56:43 AM
It is this time of the year again to check the brew logs and do the tally.
I brewed 22 times and made 110 gal of beer. (3 times less then in 2009).

How much did you brew last year?
What was the beer you brew the most?

Look in your logs and have a fun.

I brewed 22 times for a total of 114 gal.  I don't really have one beer that I brew the most.  I tend to brew ESB, Ordinary Bitter, and IPAs so I always have some in the house.  I have decided to brew an Old Ale and Barleywine as a vintage each year.

First year brewing. Did three 5 gallon batches. Got 132 bottles total. That's 12.375 gallons of finished beer.
Batch 1 was a Red Ale. 2 was a Witbier, and 3 was a Scottish Ale. I'd like to try for once a month in 2011.

Probably about 120 gallons, not nearly enough since we drank 40 gallons in one day for Oktoberfest.  I had 10 taps last year so I always had really wide variety and never concentrated on any particular style.
This year I'll do better and should brew our (my wife and I) legal limit of 200 gallons.

How does all that beer get drank? 40 GALLONS in one day? I'm lucky if we go through 5 gallons in 3 months. The curse of living "so far" from the reach of the RATP I guess.

Friends and family drink a lot of it, especially my daughter and her friends.  Not that they come over and pound my beer, but she'll come by with her roommate or some friends a couple of times per week and have a few pints.  I probably have 3 pints almost every day, and we have a few very big parties every year-Mardi Gras, Oktoberfest and Labor Day.  Most of the beers are 4-6% ABV so I'm not talking much strong stuff.  In fact my last keg of Imperial stout took over 2 years to drink.

I came up unusually short this year compared to years past,  but in any case,  I found the time to cram in 18 batches for a yield of  just under 85 gal.  It was mostly ESB and Pale,   plus the usual double batches of  brews that I age for varying lengths of time before consuming (IPA,  19th century (strong) Stout Porter,  Christmas Burton solera, and Sack Mead).  I also did a couple batches of  mild (in the modern sense)  ale that were very nice during the summer months.

I managed also to try some historical recipe re-creations this past year.
I generally don't like to use use recipes which are not of my own devising, but If you haven't been to  Ron Pattinson's blog   (http://barclayperkins.blogspot.com)  you owe it to yourself to visit.
Besides Ron's debunking many of the brew myths that we have been buying into for years, the recipes that have been posted at his blog (which were recreated by Kristen) are pretty phenomenal...incredibly well researched and mighty tasty.

Since Nov 1, it looks like I'm at about 2300 gal. ;)

Home brewing in 2010, looks like 15 full batches and two halves, for about 90 gal total. My biggest year so far.

Batch #282 brewed Jan 3, 2010 and #297 Dec. 26.  So 16 sessions, most of which were 10 gallons.
A brewed a pretty good variety this year.  Dort Export is still my house lager, brewed it 3 times, Rye IPA twice, Bock twice, Baltic Porter, IPA, Weissen, a Koelsch, an APA, a Wit, a Tripel, a failed Scotch ale that I later pitched Brett B. and one mead.

I lost all my notes but think at least 80 gallons. Plans are to hit it this year.

Losing your notes is a loss worth a few tears in your beers  :'(

I managed to brew 11 times for a total of 58 gallons, plus a 6 gallon batch of mead, 6 gallons of cider, and 15 gallons of wine.

With the move overseas (and the lag time in getting a new brewery set up in my basement) I only got to 5 five-gallon batches: Oktoberfest, Irish Red, Pumpkin Ale, IPA, and a Magic Hat #9 clone. I also did 1 one-gallon batch of a Belgium with Coriander for the MIL.

I rounded out 2010 with two 2.5g test batches in the latter part of December. I bottled both of them today. Do they go on 2011 or 2010?

The IPA is wonderful. Wish I'd done 5g! Oh well I now have new notes (hardcopy) and can replicate it if desired. Starting all over again...  :'(  ::)

I started brewing the last weekend of March. I brewed 26 times in 2010 for around 65 gallons. I was kind of all over the map, style wise, like a kid in a candy store. The first batch was an Irish Red, the last a Sweet Stout. I started doing lagers in August, and now plan to have at least one batch lagering at all times. It was quite a journey: started out extract, went partial mash in June and all grain in August, and started kegging in December. I've learned a whole lot along the way.

I found that I had inadvertently brewed a couple of quarts over the limit, so I filtered it and then ran it out on the ground before the end of last year. :D

So I'm not the only nutcase here.... ;) First batch mid November, straight to kegging, almost done with AG setup for batch number 6.....

There's plenty of nutjobs in this hobby... I've ony known 2 homebrewers who didnt get carried away... and I think that was only due to their primary hobbies taking up most of their time/$$.

Me too.  Variety is the spice of life.  I've only re-brewed a style/recipe a few times.  I like trying out new things all the time.  2010 saw Lazy Dog crank out 6 batches for around 31 gallons of finished beer - one batch short of my goal.  I did Blonde Ale, N. Eng. Brown, Old Ale, CAP, Cal. Common, and an Oktoberfest (my first lager).   However, I kept myself in beer which is the over-riding goal  8)

Nah, I am another nutcase. I started in Sept, when to AG on my third batch and went to kegging last month. I only have one tap on my kegorator, but I have room for 5 kegs, and 6 taps. (Gonna have that Stout tap, even if I don't have one on tap all the time)

I think it was about 20 batches, (including cider) around 120 gallons and of that, almost a quarter of it was stouts.   I think I brewed more this year than I did in all the years I did extract combined.  Glad I went all grain, so much better.  All grain and kegging changed me forever!  (and probably added 30 lbs!)

I did a lot of business travel, so was severely limited in brewing time. I did manage to brew in three different countries though...

My total comes out as:
15 batches of beer, totaling 90 gallons
60 gallons of cider
25 gallons of various wines

10 batches for 50 Gal.

Thought it was more - should have been, since I was kind of semi-retired (aka unnemployed) for most of the year. Another year of trying to perfect my recipes.

4 IPA
2 APA
2 Imperial Stout
2 Blonde

Only 30 gallons or so for 2010.  Having a newborn really takes away the brewing time.  I'm already at 13 gallons in 2011, so there still hope for me.

Homebrewed 8 times (10 gallon batches), so I'm well under my legal limit.
Still got some beer laying around in the kegs--going to have to free up some space before I brew again.
I wish I had more time to brew smaller batches and tweak recipes.
Guest-brewed my Saison recipe with a pro brewer 2 times (250 gallons each time), so my total for 2010 gets bumped to:
10 brewdays and 580 gallons.
