The bill to change the OR homebrew law is about to go before the Business, Transportation and Economic Development Committee (BTED) as soon as Feb. 2 and then could be in front of the full senate by Feb. 4 or the week after. It's time for OR homebrewers to swing into action. This bill was drafted by an OR senator who is a homebrewer with input from the Oregon Homebrewers Alliance. You can read the bill and the amendments that go with it at http://oregonhomebrewersalliance.org/ . Contact your legislator to support SB 444 with the "dash-1 amendments." Do it now! It's likely this bill will sail through the legislature, but we need your help to make sure. You can post questions or comments on the OHBA website.
-
I think the usual sort of warning applies here as always.
If you don't live in the jurisdiction affected, please don't contact the legislators. It doesn't help and could actually hurt.
So, please only reach out if you live in Oregon.
-
Or if you know someone who lives there, ask them to contact their legislators. My mother-in-law already did. :)
-
UPDATE: The committee hearing for SB444 has been set for Thur. Feb. 10. OREGON HOMEBREWERS, now is the time to contact committee members and your legislators! Please don't put it off!
-
Oregon residents, please contact the members of the Senate Business, Transportation and Economic Development Committee prior to their Thursday, February 10 meeting and urge them to support passage of SB 444. See the Action Alert the AHA sent to Oregon AHA Members, clubs, homebrew shops and breweries (http://bit.ly/g9lQB3) for details.
The best way for non-Oregon residents to help this cause would be to forward the alert to anyone they know in Oregon that might be interested in supporting homebrewers.
Thanks!
Gary

It's likely the hearing will be live online. It's tomorrow, 2/10 at 3 PM. If you're interested in watching, go to http://www.leg.state.or.us/listn/ and pick Capitol Hearing Room B.

What time will the hearing be held?

Now we just need someone to post a reminder at 3PM :)
And that's Pacific Time!
-
Oh,,, 6PM to the rest of us. ;-)
-
How'd the hearing go Denny? I was driving home at 6:00 so I didn't get the chance to watch.
-
I couldn't watch either, come on Denny!
Maybe the silence means Denny was incarcerated for contempt of congress. :o
"What do you corrupt, designer suit wearing, adulterous jackasses know about anything anyway?"
Remember, corrupt politicians make the other 10% look bad ;)

The bill breezed through the Senate committee. Even an OLCC rep was there to testify in favor. By next Thur. it should pass the Senate and move on to the House, where it should go through easily also.

This is very positive news Denny! :)

Now if you could do the same for Mississippi
;D ;D ;D

Good picture of the guys presenting on the AHA main page. I said, that's Gary Glass! Great to see the AHA staff helping move this issue along.
Hard to say for sure what color shoes Denny had on.
-
I chickened out on the red Converse.

Sometimes you have to dress for the occasion.
Otherwise you should have red Converse Chuck Taylors and a blue cooler. ;)

If you have a witbier in your glass you would be very patriotic!

SB444 passed the OR Senate unanimously today with no debate! On to the House!
-
Great news Denny, thanks for keeping us up to date!
-
Awesome news Denny! 8)
-
It's a beautiful thing!
-
SB 444 has been assigned to the House Business & Labor Committee. No date for a hearing yet, but that could come at any time, so now is the time for Oregon residents to start contacting the committee members, as well as the Representatives for their districts asking them to support the bill. See the Action Alert we just sent to Oregon AHA members: http://bit.ly/hmMJ2E.
-
SB 444 passed the OR House today. All that's left is for the governor to sign it and OR will have the best homebrew law in the US!
-
Awesome news Denny, congratulations!
-
A big thanks to WAHA for their advice, Tom!
-
This is fabulous news Denny! 8)
Congrats to OR homebrewers!
-
One legislator read a poem he'd written about homebrew. Another one broke the law and brought a bottle of homebrew to toast with!

Awesome! When we got our bill signed the Governor wanted to know why we hadn't brought her any homebrew. We explained that would have been illegal . . . and then she said "so if someone in the office brought in homemade wine as gifts?" and she glanced at a guy in the corner who had a grin on his face. :)
Glad we could help. I was talking to an OR guy this weekend, the bill has an emergency clause so it takes effect right away, right? Good news for the NHC First Round. :)
He also said it was so liberal you can sell your homebrew if you "need to", and everyone in OR is going to be required to have homebrewing gear in case of emergency. ;D

Yep, it's an emergency!

I hope he was joking....that particular issue was tough enough to reassure legislators about.
-
Good news and great work Denny! Congratulations!

I'd like to recognize Greg Bolt, Chris Hummert, Ted Hausotter, and Denny Conn who created the Oregon Home Brewers Alliance and spearheaded the OHBA's effort to get the Oregon homebrew law changed. I've been truly impressed by their tireless efforts dedicated to pushing Senate Bill 444 through the legislature. It's been a real honor for me to work with these guys on this campaign.
Up next: Alabama should have a bill to legalize homebrewing filed in the very near future. I am optimistic about that bill's chances for success this year.

We need a "blush" emoticon!

Thanks for your hard work Denny. Cheers
-
Denny, good work. Glad to see it is done, well except for the last signature. Do you get a pen from the signing?
Seriously, this shows that the system can be made to work. Glad to see the OR homebrewers can enter the Nationals.
I had best go keg those beers I brewed for the Nationals.
-
We have a signing ceremony with the gov on Mon. afternoon. He even sent along his preferences for after signing libations!
-
Here's my question. If the governor asked you for a wheat beer to celebrate, what would you do?
-

That's really cool!
You should give him a sample of your Rye IPA...or your VBIP. :)
-

Bavarian hefe, wheat wine, lambic, Berliner weisse, anything but what he probably meant. :)
-

Give him my German pils.

The word is that he likes "lighter" styles.

You really think Denny would cave like you did and put on a tie just to get his pic snapped with the guv?

I didn't have to wear a tie, I chose to (note Tim, the guy on the left) ;)

Yep, just like that...although I probably won't dress up like you guys did. Our gov wears blue jeans and cowboy boots to work.

Awesome! Congrats!
Nice tie.
-
Job well done!
Where's the homebrew?
I like a Govenor who goes tieless. I think you might have overdressed a bit Denny.
Is the guy to your left a homebrewer? (he has no facial hair)
-
This is huge milestone for OR...so glad to see it done.
Denny...you should be very proud of this.
Homebrewers in OR should be very thankful and proud.
Congrats! :)

Is that Ted Hausotter in the tan jacket?

Yes

Is that Ted Hausotter in the tan jacket?
Yep. From L to R, it's State Sen. Floyd Prozanski, sponsor of the bill (and a hell of a homebrewer!), Chris Hummert from the Oregon Home Brewers Alliance, Gov. John Kitzhaber (what you can't see is the faded blue jeans, cowboy boots, and silver belt buckle with a big "K" on it), me, Greg Bolt of the OHBA (who did a lot of the heavy lifting), and Ted.
The guv had another meeting to go to, so we just left homebrew for him. Then we went back to Floyd's office and partied!

Thanks, Ron. It should be a milestone for all homebrewers, I hope. We now have the most liberal homebrew law in the country according to Gary. I hope it becomes the model for other states.
-
Nice job, all. Shows what happens when you mess with homebrewers in the PNW.
So what's the badge-looking thing on several of your lapels?

Chris had badges made for "Homebrew Independence Day". There weren't enough for everybody, so I gave mine to Greg in appreciation of all the work he did. He was the one who first made contact with Floyd. His background as newspaper reporter was invaluable to keep abreast of what was going on in the bill.
-
That's awesome Denny, more congratulations! I'm glad to see Ted made the drive too. :)

Ah, I get it now. You're listing the folks in the original pic and not the one in this post. Was driving me crazy trying to find the sixth guy in that pic :)

I know...it was scary to think that the 3rd guy from the left was their Governor. ;)

...Gov. John Kitzhaber (what you can't see is the faded blue jeans, cowboy boots, and silver belt buckle with a big "K" on it),..
Well that explains the Code of the West, "Cowboy Ethics" bill. :)

Yeah, because they had nothing more important to do.... ::)
-
Hey Denny...you made the front page of the AHA website.
Looking good with your Wile E Coyote and Roadrunner tie. :)
-
God, that's gonna scare people off....

Yeah, because they had nothing more important to do.... ::)
I think passing symbolic legislation to encourage the constituancy to live a responsible life-style is a good thing.

I think passing symbolic legislation to encourage the constituancy to live a responsible life-style is a good thing.
I think it's a waste of time because it does nothing and will be largely ignored. Living a responsible lifestyle has to be taught, and the earlier you start the better. Emphasis on _I_ think, just my opinion. :)
-
I think it's a waste of time because it does nothing and will be largely ignored.
Are you talking about the bill, or the legislature itself? :D
Just goofing around guys... The proof that the legislature gets good things done on behalf, and with the help, of their constituancy is in the subject of this thread.
