Title: High Quality Hops
Post by: pmallory on February 19, 2011, 12:18:11 AM
I recently ordered some cheap Cascade hops for around $10 / pound. They were decent quality at best, not very good. I would only use them in malt oriented beers, and probably won't buy them again. They were from NicoBrew. I am curious if anybody has favorite places for ordering hops, and not because of price, but for flavor and quality. I think this last batch of hops has taught me not to skimp on ingredients. What about good organic hops? Anybody know of any good farms to buy from?

I found some great organic (although not certified) Cascade hops. DeSmet Farms out of Albuquerque, NM are great. They sometimes have Willamette also. I've been to the farm and got to see their care for the plants. I also grew my own and that's a great way to know how high of quality you are using.

I buy bulk from hopsdirect.  I've never had a quality problem.

+1, the HopsDirect hops I've gotten have always been great.

Freshhops is pretty reliable too.

I've bought from both hopsdirect and freshops and have no complaints.

Same here, both are excellent.  Since I brew mostly with pellets, the variety at hopsdirect steers me in that direction most often.

speaking of - was going to order some bulk hops - really only wanted a half-pound of Styrian Goldings, any one in the Seattle area want to go in half on a 1lb order (or larger if you want to order more)?  PM me if interested.

How do you guys feel about Crosby and Baker?  My LHBS carries those, and I've had good experiences with it, using several types, (Styrian Golding, Hallertau, Tettnanger) all pellets.

I also but from either hopsdirect or freshhops.

In fact a pound of Chinook from freshhops landed in my lap this a.m....complements of redbeerman. We're splitting them.
