Title: This Calls For a Beer!
Post by: punatic on March 17, 2011, 06:19:05 AM
In this time of majorly weird Sheeit happening in the world, good things still happen too.

What triumphs have you achieved lately?

Me, I just submitted the final report on a two-year-long, very contentious project.  Man it felt good to click on that send button!

So, I'm raising a glass of 2011 Expedition Bigfoot...  Prost!

Well, in the spirit of shameless self-promotion that Drew exhibited earlier (;D), I got back my exam results from a tasting retake I took a few months back, and I got a Master level score.  Now I just need to bring my written up.

And this past weekend I was awarded the 2010 Golden Mash Paddle by the Washington Homebrewers Association.
Quote
The purpose of the Golden Mash Paddle is to recognize individuals who work to significantly advance the Washington homebrewing movement.  The nominees and recipients of this award go above and beyond the call of duty to pioneer movements at and beyond the club-level, benefiting the Washington homebrew scene. Well done Tom, on both accounts.  Congratulations!

Golden Mash Paddle...   hmmm...

"Thank you sir!  May I have another?"   ;)

My major accomplishment so far this year is that I haven't dropped any of the balls I have in the air.....I drink to that....daily!

I don't want to disclose financials, but this year my company's revenues are poised to double, and I'm signing the paperwork to take it multinational in April. Not trading on an exchange yet, but who knows ;-) I've had a LOT of work lately, both company-related and personally, but when I look back to where I was only five years ago:

and think about where I am now

Well, I think that calls for a beer. I don't usually take time to think about how much better and different things are now, mainly because it's so painful to think about how things used to be. But when I do think about it, I sure do thank God and count my blessings. And then I think maybe I should write a book ;-)

EDIT: Forgot to list in the positives, my hops are poking out of the ground! Operation Biergarten is a go!

I got a 3% raise out of the blue last week. And I'm poised to get 4% this summer. Regardless, still underpaid but grateful to have such a wonderful job. Remember much harder, leaner and desperate times. :-\

Phil that's great! Here's to you and family! /raise

My wife FINALLY ditched Navistar (after 15 years) and we're moving south instead of to Illinois.  She resigned on Monday and starts  April 11 at her new job.  So this down time before packing and unpacking might be the only chance to have a beer in the next couple months.

Got a LOT of praise yesterday after our new president's inauguration for the work my team and I have accomplished in the last 15 months in our small university library--and a big shout-out during the president's address where he committed $ to our humble abode. When I got there it was all kinds of fail... bad customer service, a facility that had been neglected for decades, etc. It wasn't just the big $ stuff (like the 1950s-era tables and chairs throughout the place, or basic lack of power and networking where it's needed, or a heating and cooling system that, well, isn't); it was the small stuff that really stood out, like broken bathroom exhaust fans (pee-u), sticking doors, messy paper signs everywhere, students who sat there texting when people had questions, and walls that hadn't been painted since 1956. Our website was a single embarrassing page, even though we have a really good selection of e-resources which of course no one knew about. 2/3 of our faculty (the adjuncts) were actively discouraged from using our library. 1/3 of the books were uncataloged. Our basic services (research help, instruction)... well, they were just plain bad. If you looked closely I swear the front door had a sign on it that said GO AWAY.

We're still on the journey, but I have a wonderful team (couple of remove-and-replaces if you know what I mean), and with a lot of imagination, heart, and dedication, we've turned this place around and keep on turning. The furniture is still old (2 weeks ago a table collapsed and bruised the shin of a student on the cross-country team... and no I didn't loosen the screws to make a point :-) ), the facility still inadequate, but we're remaking ourselves into the living room of the university and an essential service to our students and faculty, plus a center for celebrating literature and art, with events several times a month. And the bathroom exhaust fans work.

You can do a lot with paint, carpet, and good people. Like homebrewing, it ain't all about $. Though I will take the $!

I'll take a Pliny, please. Prost!

Good question.

I don't know the answer to that, but I can tell you that when you drive through Delaware on I-95, don't blink because you'll miss it. We are the second smallest state in the US next to Rhode Island.

First of all I have not killed my wife of 30 years as she finally finishes her Masters in public health nursing.
Second since taking over pretty much complete control of the company I work for after the death of the owner we're more profitable than ever.  I actually have little to do with that since the price of oil means exploration in our area is booming.  But we're about to close a deal which will enable us to build and sell the electronic equipment needed to do our job.  That's something my old boss would have never allowed to happen, we've been working with 1970's technology because in his words "it's paid for and it still works".   As our competitors moved ahead we fell behind in the technology aspect.  Now our competitors will have to buy equipment from us.  So we're branching out into the manufacturing world and I'm pretty excited about it.

I feel a little inadequate after reading all the wonderfull things y'all are up to!

on the other hand I have done a couple of things

I helped my wife give birth to a wonderful baby and have managed to keep him alive since november! (knock on wood)
I was offered a major promotion at work (In a year or two, when the other guy retires)
Bought my first NEW car. (probably the last one as well, unless I manage to save enough for the TESLA S in the next couple of years)
Built myself an immersion chiller that really works.
Tacked another year onto the longest, best and most rewarding romantic relationship I have ever had or hope to have. (3 years married, 6 years together)

That's about it. guess that will have to do

LOL...that is pretty much the truth.

There is some interesting beer history in Delaware. The Dutch and Germans were the first to settle here in the early 1600's. Here's a cool factoid on beer history in Delaware.

My idea was to share good news - large, small, medium kine - it's all good!  If it makes you happy, share!

It was such a great feeling to finish that project, I just wanted to crow a bit.

A really cool unintended benefit is getting to see the diversity of activities that members of this forum participate in.

I meant to start the thread in The Pub but goofed up and put it in General Homebrew Discussion.  That's what drinking Bigfoot will do to ya...

BTW. Who is General Homebrew anyway, Charlie?

One more thing . . . my twins turn 6 today ;D  They were very excited, not just because of the presents but because they got to pick a lot of stuff that they usually have little or no control over.  They had pancakes and poached eggs on toast for breakfast, I drove them to school instead of them taking the bus, they're having fudgsicles and fruit-sicles at school, they'll take the bus home instead of going to the after school program at taekwondo, we'll have pizza and macaroni and cheese with a crust on top for dinner, and if I can find it we're going to watch Megamind tonight.  I think I'll meet them at the bus stop with balloons. :)  Very fun, happy day.

It really is great to see all of the positive stuff going on in people's lives.

My oldest daughter is back from her chior trip the San Francisco as of 3:20 this morning.  She's fine and had a really great trip.  I'm happy to have her home safe and have the whole crew back in the house.  Our two college visits with my son went very well and he's starting to feel more confident in making those decisions.

I'm just happy to have great kids and to be alive to see them grow up.

all of these are great and speak to why homebrewers are so cool. in my case, I had 3 very miserable years professionally before coming to this job, so it felt good talking about it. Babies, retirements, supporting spouses in their journeys, even a day of perfect parking karma... it's all good!

I had some beers with some friends from my old place of work.  They were toasting my retirement, and wishing they were!

Congrats! I'm working towards mine but still have 23 years left... :( Quite honestly not in a hurry. :D What I've seen though is one needs to stay active and have interests. Otherwise the decline in very swift.

Hmmm what could keep a homebrewer busy..?

I've had a couple little victories. Today, I got all my brew stuff out of storage, finally, and moved to my buddies where I will be setting up shop. Tomorrow, I am going over to organize, and clean.

And, I'm coming up on my first year of Idaho life. Before I came here, I think I made it quite cleat that I would rather be tied to a chair and kicked down a flight of stairs than move here. Turns out, next to Holly and brewing, it;s the best thing that's ever happened to me.  Think I'll have a beer tonight.  :D

    (good thread)

I haven't jumped in here yet, but damn, if a thread's got the official Weaze Samp of Approval, I'm there. Nothing huge in my life recently so I'll throw out two things....

first, the big victories & milestones are wonderful and deserve a raised glass but don't forget to appreciate all the little things we so often forget. life is sweet and it's the details that make it so on a daily basis.

and second, the toasts themselves are often things of beauty, small gems of poetry, philosophy, blessings and we shout them out with a raised glass but don't stop to appreciate them enough. Many are essentially wishes for good health - slainte, salud, na zdrowie. Some celebrate companionship & the moment - prosit, cheers, cin-cin, noroc, here's to you. Then there are those that celebrate the drink its ownself - down the hatch kampai, bottoms up.  My favorites are those to life itself - l'chaim or the incredible Costa Rican pura vida. Pura Vida means Pure Life. The Ticas (Costa Ricans) use it for everything... hello, goodbye, a toast, when a beautiful woman walks by, pretty much appreciation of everything that happens.

So, I'll raise my glass to all y'all, Pura Vida!!

well if we are taking in to account child rearing.  both my son's are eagle scouts.  they both are in NROTC at ohio state and are engineering majors.  The oldest will be graduating soon and off to pensacola for flight school (he has the common sense to stay off submarines)  and my daughter is a fantastic pitcher.   :D

I have a T-shirt signed by Trader Jon........ ;D (No I'm not Navy.....not counting a year and a half destroying roads in Holland in a tank I am a civilian puke....)
