Title: Gordon Strong, "Brewing Better Beer" on Amazon pre-order & in WorldCat
Post by: kgs on March 19, 2011, 05:15:26 PM
Just saw this today (it wasn't there a week ago):

http://www.amazon.com/Brewing-Better-Beer-Advanced-Homeowners/dp/0937381985/

I'm sure AHA's store will carry it, but seeing it as an Amazon pre-order is always a good sign!

It's also in WorldCat: http://www.worldcat.org/oclc/704120279 (this makes it easy for librarians to catalog the book when they buy it)

Congrats!

Thanks kgs. This is one I might add to my stable of brewing books.

I hope there's a Kindle version.  I've been slowly converting my beer book library over to a more mobile and electronic format.  I like the convenience of being able to carry around some terrific brewing resources with me wherever I go.

If you're saying what I think you're saying, that's an Amazon problem.  If you click the ad at the top of this page you can see a picture of the book.

I know someone who works at Amazon.  Maybe he's punking me.  I did double-check the artwork, which is correct.  Maybe I can double my sales if I cross-list it in the home improvement section.   ::)  I'm wondering if someone submitted it on an iphone, and we're just seeing autocorrect gone wild.

I will be signing copies at the NHC.  I hope to have a book tour of sorts in the midwest and other areas where I might be traveling, if it coincides with a competition or other beer event.  I'll talk to Justin and see if he wants to do something through the BN.

I finished the book late last summer, and have been anxiously waiting for it to come out.  It takes a lot longer than you'd think.  Thanks to everyone for the good wishes.

Randy Mosher wrote some nice quotes for me; he reviewed the book after we were in Australia last fall.  Mufasa wrote a killer foreword for it.  They're going to excerpt part of it in an upcoming Zymurgy and I'll be giving a talk on part of the material at the NHC.

I'm torn . . . do I pre-order or do I just buy it at the conference?  I can't decide.  Ideally (for me) I could pre-order and then pick it up at the conference.

Thanks for all the good wishes; I hope you all enjoy the book.  Kristi has told me pre-sales are strong.  Looks like they fixed the title on Amazon -- don't want any disappointed homeowners.

kgs, if you still don't have the info let me know via email and I'll forward the message to you.

I'll be doing some events between now and the NHC; if you see me, I'll be happy to sign it for you.  I know they'll have something set up in San Diego.  I'm also hoping to have a launch event set up on the west coast within a month.  More details after it's finalized.

I think to best hit your target audience we could arrange for you to give a talk, and then you can sell/sign books afterward.  It would take up a few hours one evening though, and attendance might be down because of the holidays.  We can talk, if it works out that would be great, if it doesn't, it doesn't.

How about a few great cigars and all the homebrew you can drink?   ;D  I live only 2.5 hours from the Twin Cities and would definitely swing over there if you're giving a talk at an event.

Yes, just owning the book is guaranteed to improve your beers' scores by 1 point compared to identical beers judged under identical conditions.  Reading it will get you 3 points more per beer, and applying it will get you 5-17 more points, depending. ;)

...and just waving the book over your fermentation vessel will give you 2 points for overall impression.  ;)

Don't forget too, grinding the book up & adding it to a batch will make that batch the BEST beer on Earth - ever!  ;)

In all honesty you have to hand it to Gordon. Anybody that can win three back to back Ninkasi awards is "the man" in my book(no pun intended yet)

Mine's sitting in the Pre-order pile.  Apparently they have to convert it all to Metric or something because Amazon.ca (note ca, not com) won't have it until May.  Now my beer is going to suffer for another month.  Just the price I have to pay for living north of the 49th parallel.

I ordered Palmers and the Jamil Z Yeast book at the same time.  Not sure which one to read first.

Just wanted to hijack this thread a moment to talk about the latest book info.

I'm happy to announce the official launch party for my book will be on the Session on the Brewing Network on Sunday April 24th.  I'll be there in person, and will be signing books that will be available in their BN store after the show.  For those of you used to this moderated forum environment, the BN is a bit more, um, free-wheeling.  That's your only warning.   ;)

I'm also scheduled to appear at the MoreBeer store in Concord, CA at 3pm on Saturday, April 23rd to sign books.  They'll have them for sale there as well.  Come out and say hi, and feel free to bring some beer to share.

I might do some other thing while out there.  Follow my tweets if you want in.

I've heard from Brewers Publications that pre-sales to AHA members have been very strong.  Thanks to you all.

Great news! I don't need any more of an excuse for the 5-hour round-trip drive to MoreBeer. I hope they will let those of us who bought your book through BeerTown to get them signed. I'll bring my Citra IPA too (though, judging from another thread, Citra is not everyone's favorite hop), it might distract them. Besides, who can go to MoreBeer without spending under $100 anyway? It's nearly impossible.

That's Easter weekend and my better half is a minister, which actually makes Saturday quite feasible ("let me stay out of your hair!") assuming I can stomach crossing the Bay Bridge on a weekend (as I do this every work day).

Gordon, are you having any SF readings/appearances?

Gordon, are you having any SF readings/appearances?

I'm flying in and out of SFO, and will probably be drinking in SF and Oakland (and Pacheco).  But no other formal appearances planned yet.  Readings?  That's a good one...  I'll likely be in SF Friday night when I first get in.  Might go to the Monk's Kettle.  I'll tweet about it when I get there.  I'm hooking up with Nathan Smith and Nicole Erny as my native guides, so I'm likely to wind up wherever they have the most IPAs and Belgian beers.  ;)

If I'm out and about and tweet about it, feel free to stop by.  But if you go to MoreBeer, I do want to try your beer.

My author copies showed up this weekend too.  Opened the box with the family; it was worth it just to see the look on the faces of my wife and daughter when they saw the dedication.  Everything else from now on is a bonus.

I've heard that Amazon is quoting a later date.  Not sure why.  Except perhaps their boxes ship after all the AHA orders are handled.  I will be signing some for the Brewing Network guys.  They should have it in their store sooner, after this weekend most likely.  The AHA store is obviously still selling it.

Just got mine in the mail.  Will read cover to cover, rinse repeat.
Worth the wait.

Paul, we went on a river trip years back out of Bluff, Utah (look it up if you don't know).  They called wondering if we were going.  Said, "sent the check 7 or 8 days ago".  He laughed, and said no probelm.  The mail would have gone to SLC in 3 or 4 days, then moves one day at a time from town to town on the USPS trucks until it got there.  All was cool, and we had an excellent trip.

In the days of next day air, and the instant comunications from the internet, we forget that some things take some time.

Took part of my BJCP exam study time today to read some of it and I'm already over a third through it.  Good so far.  I always feel bad for authors when I finish a book.  Took them forever to write and I tear through it in a day, week, month, etc.

I remember the days when rapid service meant under 14 days.   :D  I was going for funny and might have missed the mark. No worries here , I'm still working on the last issue or BYO anyway.  There's plenty of books left on the Kindle I haven't read yet.  I just wish Spring would get here.  4 inches of snow in Ames this morning and it just keeps getting colder here in Des Moines.

Thanks for the LOL this morning.  It took me a second but vrey funny,

My copy showed up on Tuesday here in IA.  Started reading it yesterday.  Not too far but I'm liking it so far.  Not your typical beer text approach.  And I kind of wondered about the 12L Crystal too.  I figured it was just me not paying enough attention over the years.

Got my busted up bubble-mailer today, in a bag with the USPS' "sincere apology" for damaging the package.  Thankfully, the book is ok.  The mailer was completely ripped open, end to end.  Hard to believe that a mail processing machine did that, but whatever.  The book survived, and it looks like it's going to be a great read!

I got mine this week.  Is there an official errata yet?  Or do I not know what 12° L crystal malt is on page 3 in the recipe (I was thinking it is 120°)?

From the few pages I have read, it is great.  Thank you Gordon Strong!

Argh!  Yes, 120L.  You'd think with four rounds of editing and a dozen people looking at it, we'd find things like this.  I'm sure the error was mine.  Just a simple typo.  Thanks.  I'll start an errata list.

Although I'm sure it would be good with 12L too ;-)

Just a quick note: I'm in the Bay Area now.  I was up to 3am last night drinking Nathan Smith's homebrew.  I love staying with beer people!  Finally tried Falconer's Flight in one of his IPAs.  Stop by MoreBeer later today if you're in the area.

Do I win a prize?  The only reason I caught that mistake was when I was entering it into my brew software.

Have fun on the BN, I'll be listening.

...I'm also scheduled to appear at the MoreBeer store in Concord, CA at 3pm on Saturday, April 23rd to sign books.  They'll have them for sale there as well.  Come out and say hi, and feel free to bring some beer to share ...I've heard from Brewers Publications that pre-sales to AHA members have been very strong.

Don't worry, I'll sign it.  And I do like Citra.
It was great to meet you. Thanks for the tasting and attaboy on Saturday.

BTW, I have set aside those beers. I'll let you know if I notice it's peaked.

Gordon, it has been a fun read so far, and I can hear you saying much of this as I read.  Many things you recommend I already do.  Some are now on the list to try.  I really like your take on water.  I learned it the hard way, and one can hope that your book will keep others from undue adjustments.  "Less is more" on water adjustments.

Since you took the 12oL crystal errata well, there is one on page 116 that says 'Most starches gelantinize by 158oF (170oC)"   That should be 70oC.  Someone else would have pointed it out soon.

Thanks for all the kind words and honest opinions.  If any of you have read it, would you mind rating it and/or posting a review on Amazon.com?  I've seen some noise on various forums about the lack of reviews so far.  Given that some people seem to be discussing it without reading it, I thought it might be helpful to those who haven't bought it yet if they got some independent assessments.

Thanks.

Gordon, got my copy yesterday and already read 50 pages on the treadmill last night. I admit I began skimming the "philosophy" section but then slowed down to carefully read word-for-word on mashing and lautering. I appreciate the strategic placement of illustrative recipes. I promise to review it on Amazon as soon as I'm done (helping a student with her masters thesis this weekend so it will be another week I think).

Gordon, are you dosing yeast nutrients?  Perhaps I simply missed if/when you covered it in the book, but with RO and what seems like a "less-is-more" approach to salt additions, do you end up having to add Mg, Zn, etc for the yeast?  *edit* - yeah I worded that poorly; my bad.  Many of us have been told RO water won't have the nutrients the yeast need. You seem to have some different ideas on water chemistry and I mentioned your water salt additions as an example.  I was basically asking if not using yeast nutrients with RO was another example.  My apologies if I confused anyone.  I'm at work, and I write better after I drink.   ;D

cheers--
--Michael

(I am almost to the end of the book and will write a review on Amazon when I reach it. Thanks again for writing this book.)

Most nutrients come from the malt.  When I make starters, I use Wyeast yeast nutrient at recommended dosages.  Same for repitch.  I mention this on p. 130 and 132.  I don't normally add extra yeast nutrient beyond what's in the starter, at least on first gen yeast pitches.

Water salts don't provide trace elements for yeast nutrition, either.

Don't forget too, grinding the book up & adding it to a batch will make that batch the BEST beer on Earth - ever!  ;)

Except for the papery off-flavor. . .

I got it two days ago, read much of it and skimmed the rest with the intention of reading it more carefully later. My opinion is that it's an instant classic. If you're an experienced brewer, some of the process and ingredient information will be familiar, but there's enough good tips than even a veteran will find it useful. If you're a beer judge, but not such a good brewer, the information on off-flavors will be nothing new, but the sections on style faults, tasting procedure and troubleshooting will be very helpful.

But, two suggestions for improvement.

1) Include a bibliography. While the introduction specifically says that it's not an academic book and there won't be footnotes, it would be helpful to have a short list of books mentioned in passing in the text. Maybe the page count limits precluded it, but it's the sort of useful information which could be listed on the website.

2) Add Photos, Illustrations and Graphs. The graphic design of the book is minimalist, to say the least. While graphics aren't usually necessary for a book of this sort, there are a few places where they would be handy. Also, while a master doesn't give away all his secrets, I'd love to see homebrew porn pictures of Gordon's brewing system, from modified grain mill to walk-in refrigerator full of blender beers.

Unless you're talking about trace amounts of metallic salts (i.e., FeSO4, CuSO4) due to water contamination and whatnot, but that's an entirely different kettle of finings.

I'm about two-thirds of the way through the book so far and I've really enjoyed it.  Here are some of my thoughts:

1) Thank you for being a good writer!!  This is probably just me being nitpicky, but so many authors of brewing literature don't write well.  I find this distracting.  Your thoughts are well-organized, your sentences well-constructed, and your language well-chosen.  It makes the book read so much better.

2) I love the cooking analogies peppered (pun intended  :P) throughout the book.  I share your love of cooking and I really find the comparisons helpful.

3) I am by no means the master that you are, but I've felt somewhat validated as a brewer while reading this book.  I tend to think of many aspects of brewing the same way as you do (particularly in the practical sense).  While I approach certain things a little differently, I feel like I share much of your brewing philosophy.  For example, I like your focus on a brewing system's control points -- manipulating the things in a system that are susceptible to reasonably easy adjustment.  I've spent much time over the past few years evaluating my control points and honing in on what I can tweak to make my system more efficient.

4) I feel challenged to reevaluate certain processes, especially when it comes to recipe formulation.

I'm just a bit surprised that your editor didn't pick up on the need for a bibliography. Half the books you cite in passing are published by Brewers Publications, so it would be a sales opportunity for them.

Thanks.

I've tried both methods.  Hot steep works better on my system.  Both work.  I haven't tried them side by side on a single batch so I don't know the finer points of differentiation.  It's small, though, and whatever differences could be overcome with slight changes in other parts of the recipe/process.

Gordon, if you're still building that errata list, you might want to look at your Oatmeal Stout recipe.  Don't remember the exact page off the top of my head but the recipe calls for Wyeast 1.318 - it's minor but someone got carried away with a decimal point.

I am maintaining an errata list.  It's pretty short right now, but I hope to get them fixed in the next printing.

Here it is:
p. 3, 12L should be 120L crystal
p. 116, 170C should be 70C
p. 207, Wyeast 1.318 should be Wyeast 1318

They also seemed to have reformatted my degree symbols to place it next to the number rather than next to the F or C, which is where they belong (per their own Author's Guide).

Anything else?  Don't assume someone has told me something in private; these have all been posted on the forum, and that's all I've seen.

FYI, I'll be signing books at the NHC after my talk (Sat 1-2pm, signing at 2).  You can also get me to sign it if you see me at judging, the judge reception, the BN party, or wherever I happen to be.  I'll also be at the GABF later this year.

I could put together an online version, I guess.  Looks like you've already got it mostly done.  Which mentions did you have a question about?  Maybe I could help you cull the list.

Feel free to borrow my bibliography and alter it as you see fit.

The list I put together is taken from all authors and sources mention in passing in your book, but I've had to make guesses where a book isn't mentioned by name and/or the same author has written multiple books. I assumed that if you mentioned the author by name, but didn't mention a title, you were probably referring to works referenced in the BJCP Interim Study Guide. If I couldn't figure out which book(s) you were referencing, I wrote "various." There are two exceptions, mostly because I was lazy. I didn't include a bibliography of Bamforth or Jackson's works listed in the Interim Study Guide because there are so damned many of them. Finally, since you didn't list any of them by name, but did mention the series, I included all of the Brewer's Publications "Brewing Classic Styles" series, including the most recent ones like BLAM, Wild Brews and Brewing With Wheat.

Victor

Good catch.  The OG and FG are correct, so it should be 13% ABV not 6%.  This sounds familiar; I thought we caught that one.  Maybe it was in a different article.

It's in your purse.  You'll have to empty it all out to find it.

Hey, that's where it always turns up when my wife loses something.

Shipped my entries off today.  The packaging and shipping section in Gordon's book were timely.  Built a box in a box out of styrofoam, bubble wrapped the bottles, lined it with a garbage bag, and left it open in the fridge last night.  Put th etop on and sealed it up today.  The beers we have going on will benefit from this.

We have been doing 2 day air for the last 2 final rounds.  Got that advice from a friend in the club.  I don't want my beers going across the desert Southwest in June, in a truck.

Perhaps you should keep looking for a bit after you find it so it won't be the last place you looked.

Oh, the paradox! :)

What if someone else finds it instead of me?
I made the kids clean up their games in the basement and my 9 year old found it under the couch.  So technically, it was no where I looked.

Well, glad you found it.

I'll be in Chicago tomorrow to judge at the Longshot competition.  Anyone around there is welcome to come get it signed, or pick one up from me in person.

Metric typos:

p. 205 - should be 227 g aromatic malt.
p. 205 - should add 28 g Saaz whole hops
p. 226 - should be 227 g of chocolate malt.
