Title: Pimped out grain mill
Post by: chrisinestes on March 22, 2011, 04:49:29 PM
I was given an old garage door opener. Had some scrape wood and a switch. Bought some wheels. Haha... it took two electricians to figure out how to get it to run just one way, though. I like it!

Sweet!

This is a project that's been on my list for some time...maybe it will happen later this year.

Is that a barley crusher?  What RPMs does it run, and what is the throughput?

Looks cool :)

Please put a cover on that drive chain while you still have all your fingers!

It spins faster than I can crank it for more than about 30 seconds.
I haven't run a batch through it, yet... so I don't know how long it takes, but I'm guessing about 2.5 minutes for 10 lbs.
I'm going guard free... I like the danger factor! haha

I'm with Denny.  Put a guard on the chain drive, and the belt drive.

You don't want to get fingers or clothing in either.   Or other body parts.   ;)

Then your new nickname will be something like "Bleedy" or "Stumpy"....

Ummm...Yeah...That appears to be about waist-high, if I'm not mistaken.
It would be a shame to be leaning over, pouring in your grain & have an "oops".

Sorry, for the graphic statement, but that's scary.

...and that wouldn't be good for your homebrew career...among other things.

I think you'd be much better off using a gear drive! No belts or chains. Also, with a Barley Crusher it needs to be reversible.

Cool, do you run it with the remote?  ;D

A geared motor would be great! However... the garage door open was free. Here's a question... why does it need to run backwards?

In case it doesn't catch the free roller or it jams.

I didn't think of that. Well, it's easy enough to wire in a forward/reverse switch to it if need be.

Definitely not no pants brewing friendly... ;)

It's like using any power tool.....don't put your soft parts near the sharp bits.
