Title: How much homebrew do you drink while brewing?
Post by: Wheat_Brewer on April 09, 2011, 07:39:44 PM
We're hoping that a little polling will help settle a debate at my LHBS about drinking while brewing.  Thanks!

I've done it a couple of times when I have guests for brew day, but in general I won't crack the first one until I'm chilling the wort.  The beer turns out much better that way.

I am just now finishing chilling the wort and I'm on my third beer of the day.  It's 4:00 on a Saturday for cryin' out loud!

Unless it's a special situation, like Big Brew or Learn to Brew Day, none at all.  I wait til everything is done, cleaned up, and put away.  Drinking while brewing increases the likelihood I'll screw something, and the cleanup seems like much more work if I've been drinking.  Not to mention that I usually start by 9 AM and I just don't want to drink beer that early.

I'll usually have one when I start boiling and one when I'm chilling. I don't like having more than two during a session. I like to be able to think on my feet if need be.

Once the wort is in the fermenter I'll have a beer before I start the cleanup.

Tubercle brews in the afternoon so wort will be at pitching temp the next morning (see other thread somewhere about his). From the start of crushing grain to finish cleaning and sit down is roughly 4.5 - 5 hours. So I would say approximately 4.5 to 5 hours worth.

I've usually had a few by the time the yeast is pitched.  I almost never have one until after the wort is boiling though.

Depends on the time of day. I never have one before noon (Eastern time) and never more than one at a time. May sound like I enjoy drinking beer while brewing and I do. Only got sh--faced once (while brewing). Woke up in the middle of the night trying to remember if I pitched the yeast.

I guess it'd be the same answer as Tubercle....

Oh and I light up a stogey during the mash.

Hmmm . . . now that I think about it, I've always attributed the beer turning out poorly to the beers I drink when I have company during a brew day (it's really rare, I brew alone 95+% of the time).  Maybe it's the company distracting me and not the beers!  This calls for a test ;D

Not until the wort's in the fermenters and things are cleaned and put away. If I have a few during the brew, I tend to get lazy and sometimes forget things I shouldn't so no beer for me.

Same for me.  I enjoy having a beer while brewing (it just seems to make sense), but no more than two so I'm not increasing my chances of messing up.  I have more than enough ability to do that without being tipsy! ;D

Only once I've cleaned the house to the point you wouldn't know I had been brewing. If I cracked one open during clean-up I'd start rationalizing why I needed to finish later, and it's SO much easier to clean right away.

I start brewing early and I would NEVER have a brew before noon.  But prior to that, Bloody Marys are perfectly legal, and a nutricious breakfast supplement.  And pretty soon you figure out that it's noon somewhere, why be discriminatory based on time zone?  That reminds me of a Mardi Gras story, but I digress.

Typically I would use my dial thermometer to puncture my eardrums rather than listen to country muzak, but at least he gives a nod to Jimmy Buffet.  He does have the right idea though.  Perhaps Staind will remake the song.  In the meantime, I'm going to click on the link again...

OK, you forced me to tell a story.  I had to take a redeye to New Orleans for Mardi Gras, I arrived about 6am.  A bunch of my friends were already there, they had young kids at the time, so they were already awake.  I walk in and one of my buddies looks at me and tells me that I need a beer.

"What?! At 6 am?"

"How much sleep did you get on the plane?"

"Basically none."

"So it's still last night for you."

"Good point."  So I opened an Abita Turbodog.

And my buddy says, "Well, I can't let you drink alone...'  and opens one for himself.

+1 on the cleanup - it's onerous enough without any beer onboard, but man I dread cleaning and outting away after a beer or two...

Crazy?  I think not!  Royalty always speaks in the third person.

I am a firm believer in the idea that good beer begets good beer.  Brewing is enhanced by inspiration from past success.  The key is to have the self-contol to maintain an even buzz.

However, sampling during a spirit run is strictly verboten.

We have a rule > Must drink while brewing to please the beer gods

That sometimes means  drinking @ 5:30am :o
Once the mash is set, its all systems GO for the first drink.

I bury my spent grains in the back yard while the boil is rolling.
Usually I start my brew day at 9 or 9:30 AM so I don't have a beer until after noon, but like Denny sometimes you have an event away from home where people are constantly giving you beers starting early in the day.  I guess the more people spectating the more likely you'll either make a mistake or have somebody tell you you're about to make a mistake.  Some of my best and worst beers have come from these events.

My typical brew day starts between 6:30 to 8:00 AM, depending on what the kids afternoon schedule looks like.  As a result I usually don't get my reward, aka a tall cool to cold home brew, until either clean up is done or I'm back from the kids game/event/activity.   Those pesky kids!  ::)

Its pretty easy until 6:30 or so when I have to start the strike water for the 2nd batch and start the sparge (batch) process.  Then the multitasking starts.  My feet usually hurt afterwards, but I have a brew buddy that comes over about 7:30 or so and helps clear the mash tun, grinds the grain for the 2nd batch and loads the tun with strike water while I am tending the boil.  He is also 15 years younger so he insists on doing the lifting of full carboys and such.  What a guy!  Funny though, he is the one with the back problems!  I won't let him put the full fermenters down in the freezer, somehow I think I will be less pissed if I drop/break one!  We're still done by 1:00pm.

This is why I prefer to brew alone.  Having people around, I feel like I have to entertain them, so I forget to do stuff.  I hate forgetting to take an OG reading.
I usually have 1 or 2 beers during brewing, always wait until the boil is going.  I've gotten shipwrecked a couple times while brewing early on in my brewing career and it resulted in forgetting to do some things.  Bad news.

I used to have one beer when I added the first hop addition.

Now, none at all, because I'm usually brewing on an empty stomach beginning around 10-11:00AM.

Having said that, one or two brews during a session would not cause nearly the problems as people standing around watching me brew.  I guess this is why I don't like teaching others to brew; certainly not rank beginners.

As for hot spent grain melting plastic bags, I use the plastic grocery bags from any supermarket.  They don't melt, and they're free.

I love decoction mashing for malty European styles, but I go crazy stirring the boiling mash for even 15 minutes. Having a beer makes the decoction go faster, at least in my mind. It's my timing mechanism. Other than that, usually not until the boil.

Remember how after a pee wee football/baseball/basketball game you'd all get treated to McDonalds?  That's my post-brew 'treat' (I know many think that is sick that I think McDonalds is a treat but whatever).  I like to sit there and eat my QP w/ chz and revel in a job 'presumably' well done. ;)  Wait...why is there still an ounce of Magnum and a half-tab of Whirlfloc sitting on the countertop? I think I drink enough. I never start one until the other is finished. I haven't ever really drank too many. Now bottling is another story, too much happening to enjoy drinking. I have jacked that up a little from too many. Didn't wreck the beer, just spilled more than a sober me would have.
