Title: Growlers
Post by: alikocho on April 23, 2011, 07:05:02 AM
Does anyone know where to get hold of growlers in Europe. I am aware that the flip top style with the pewter handle are made in Germany, but am completely unable to find them anywhere.

Can someone help?

I would check out some of the UK beer forums for starters.

Have done, but didn't find any leads. They don't really exist in this country....

Asuming your referring to "A growler is a U.S. half gallon (1,890 ml/66.5 imp fl oz) glass jug used to transport draft beer" then how about http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/8-X-2-LITRE-GLASS-GALLONE-BOTTLE-CIDER-JUICE-VINEGARS-/260771037261?pt=Home_Brew&hash=item3cb72a404d you can collect from the warehouse in Keynsham.

I am referring to that (rather than the version you thought I meant the other night). That would work, but I really was after the German flip top efforts.

Having looked at some images of what you're referring to, I can't say I've ever seen one.

Large swing top (Grolsch bottles) yes, large bottles with handles, yes. Combination of the two, no.

1.5 litre Grolsch bottle http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Grolsch-bottle-1-5litre-/320688605860?pt=Home_Brew&hash=item4aaa87caa4 sadly no handle.

It may be worth enquiring at Beers of Europe.

At the Midwest Regionals for the National Homebrew Contest at Sun King Brewing in Indianapolis, IN last weekend, I noticed a very nice 1.9L (1/2 gal) growler with a Grolsch style cap.  Very nice, but very pricey at $15 for just the growler.   I would imagine that you should be able to find growlers from someone in the EU for mail order.

Another option would be to add on a swing-top to the 2litre bottles I linked to. Several companies in mainland Europe sell the metal collars that can be retro-fitted to 'normal' bottles, Brouwland certainly do. Whether the diameter of the bottle neck would suit a swing-top I can't say.

The 2 liter growler is called a "siphon" in Germany.

I know. I want to get one in Europe, and Northern Brewer don't ship internationally. Plus, it would be rather like sending coals to Newcastle. ;)

Now we have the correct name for them I've found somewhere; http://www.wecomatic.com/xt/advanced_search_result.php?keywords=siphon&x=0&y=0 are based in Germany and will ship to the UK, total cost about £20. Might be worth ordering several as the postage charge is for up to 25kg

I've also been put in touch with the producer in Germany and am waiting to see what they come back with.

Trunky, do you want one?

If it's not too late I'd like to jump on this bandwagon. I'd probably be down for 2 or 3.

Very interesting the language they use in product describing.

Sorry about that, if I looked at your tag and saw you are in the UK I would of realized my reply was of the mark.  I blame lack of coffee and not enough sleep!  ::)

I'd never considered then until now, but, yes I'll take one or two.
