Title: Sneak preview....
Post by: oscarvan on May 24, 2011, 02:08:42 AM
Maybe this belongs in "equipment" but I think it is royally "pimping"...... ;D

OK, I can't hold this to myself anymore. Bought a barrel from Weyerbacher here in Easton, with the intention of making a beer cart for mobile distribution purposes. I can't tell you what I paid for the wheels, I'd have to kill you. They are wood, have bearings in them, a steel band and then a solid rubber tire, and there is a one inch axle. They are rated to several hundred pounds each, plenty in other words. Will put handles on there so you drive it like an appliance dolly. I "modified" a trash can to fit inside and hold the two cornies and ice. There is plenty of room for a 5 pound CO2 bottle. Debating whether to put a tower on it or just have picnic taps coming out the side....

Still under construction, but here's a sneak preview.

I love the idea. I wish I had one!
I think I would lean towards a tower on there. But that is just MHO.

Nice! You know you'll end up with a tower on there. Just do it from the start.

The problem with the tower is that this thing is also used in the SCA environment, and thus has to look plausibly medieval. The tower would definitely not look that part. Right now I'm leaning towards a couple of inconspicuous taps, on the drivers side. Allows me to be the "bartender" and keep control of things from the drivers position.

I wonder if you could have a couple Perlicks coming out the side and somehow clad them in wood or bronze or something more period-appropriate? Just thinking out loud...

Yes, Perlicks is what I was thinking, pointing towards the back.....

Could you jurry rig a "Beer Engine" to look medieval but still use regular taps?

Edit: Reverse that, Taps to look like a beer engine?

Nice! Bronze clad Perlicks would look good on there.

That will make you easy to identify at an event.  ;)

Yup, to be more authentic you'd need a beer engine to hand pump the brew. But I think it needs very light carbonation when one goes that route.

I like the perlicks idea, the handpump idea is good too.  The perlicks works especially well if you mount them at the bottom so it appears to be gravity fed.  That would be a lot of stooping to pour though, so I wouldn't do it.

No problem with the rubber tires at the SCA event?

Very Nice !!

I'm thinking the rubber tires may not be period, but who's gonna complain when they allow him to serve them beer????

Rule enforcement is "positive". Those that do it all period, with the research to show, get the awards. Others, like me, just make things that don't clash. I am not a period fanatic and I have no historical evidence for anything that looks even remotely like this. And no, the rubber is not period, but it's close enough. I figured steel would make the beer even dizzier than it already will be. The whole thing will blend in nicely. Bronze Perlicks....hmmmm hadn't thought about those yet. Very cool. Who's got the best deal on those right now?

http://www.kegworks.com/product.php?productid=21200&source=nextopia $77 seems not bad, at least it wasn't when the Euro was 1.3 against the dollar ;-)

Still leaning towards two bronze Perlicks on the driver's side..... keeps the bar clear, the taps on MY side. Also less obvious.... ::)

That would be cool..... Painted/stained a few pieces tonight after band practice. Final assembly tomorrow. Height adjustable handles..... stay tuned. 8)

OK, the cart part is done. A pair of replacement wheel barrel handles, some steel and some carriage bolts. The height of the handles is adjustable so as the load changes (3 full kegs to 2 almost empties would be the range) you can adjust so it's always at a comfortable ride height for any person, and they fold down for transportation. Now all that's left it the taps.

Why not taps forward?

Well done sir. Well done...

Why not taps forward?

Good question, and I thought about it for a long time......a few reasons:

1 To maintain as much of a period look as possible for medieval applications.
2 The handles fold down to the back and this way all the pointy things are on one side during transportation. It either rides in a trailer, or on a hitch carrier, depending on whether the camper is coming too, etc. When on the hitch carrier the taps could potentially end up in my tail gate if facing forward....no bueno.
3 This way the driver/bartender has control over them. If they stick out to the front I would have to come from behind the handles to serve, which is a pain, or let people serve themselves and watch them carefully open the tap a little bit, only to produce a load of foam, which irks me to no end....so QC, I drive, I tap.

Speaking of foam, I wonder if moving it around on the wheels will cause so much agitation that you only get foam anyway?  That'd be a bummer.

Well, during "testing" this weekend it worked fine, BUT..... it was full, so there wasn't a whole lot of volume above the beer. Any increase in pressure from shaking quickly went back into solution. Don't know what will happen when the barrels are half empty.....

Of course you are tapping from the bottom of the barrel, so liquid only.... My plan is to disconnect the pressure line and tap until settled out again when moving.

It's a work in progress.....
