Title: Read any good book lately?
Post by: weazletoe on June 13, 2011, 11:07:09 PM
Been a while since we had a book thread. Just thought I would check in and see if anyone has come accross some must reads.

I literally just finished Vince Flynn's "Extreme Measures" like five minutes ago. Very good read. If you haven't read Vince Flyn, do. It was my first by him, and I have two more waiting. Recently, I read "Impact" by Douglas Preston. It was ok. Been powering my way through A bunch of James Patterson. "I Alex Cross" was my last, and "Cross Fire". Both were great. I'm about halfway through Alex Cross's Trial. It's not to bad. And, waiting for me my next trip to Ohio in July, I have "One Second After".
  What's everyone else up to?

Just got done reading The Poisoner's Handbook (http://"http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/014311882X/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=stoutguycom-20&linkCode=as2&camp=217153&creative=399349&creativeASIN=014311882X") - really good historical look in the founding of forensic toxicology in NYC. Really hammers home how dangerous prohibition was due to methyl alcohol poisoning.

Also read Moonlight Mile (http://"http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0061836923/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=stoutguycom-20&linkCode=as2&camp=217153&creative=399349&creativeASIN=0061836923") which is a sort of follow up to Gone Baby Gone.

Great idea, it's always nice to see what everyone else is reading.  Here's the last couple that I finished

Freedom, Jonathan Franzen - loved it, humurous and spot on book about life, politics and family/marraige.

Musicophilia, Oliver Sacks - loved it, excellent book about music and the brain authored by an amazing neurologist.  Heavy reading

The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat, Oliver Sacks - fast read discussing various odd brain cases, also by the neurologist

The Bread Baker's Apprentice, Peter Reinhart - great bread baking book (light reading)

A Man Without a Country, Kurt Vonnegut - humorous book that you can read in a night or two.  pretty opinionated stuff

Why I Am So Wise, Friedrich Nietzsche - philosophy of sorts, some interesting points

Now I'm working on a half dozen or so books, but none that I'm that impressed with yet.  cheers, j

Not trying to get this locked for religious comments...

Just finished "Lamb" by Christopher Moore.  http://www.chrismoore.com/lamb.html
Pretty funny look at the middle of story most of us know the beginning and end of.

Funny you mention that one.  It's the book I plan to start reading on the plane to S.D. tomorrow.

I find that the audible versions are a little more fun, and, at least with the discworld series, it gets much better in the later books. The characters really come alive as he gets to know them better.

Autobiography of a Yogi, Paramahansa Yogananda

The book that got Yes to write and record Tales from Topographic Oceans...

I'm reading through the very early (and thus public domain) Wodehouse novels lately.  Finished "Love Among the Chickens" and now halfway through "A Damsel in Distress".  One of the very best English wordsmiths.

Between studying for BJCP exam and the family I hadn't had a chance to read anything for fun in a while till recently.   I read "One Second After" sometime last year and really enjoyed it.  I'll make notes of all the books in this thread and take a look at them, it's hard to find good books that hold my interest.

Star Island was pretty good. I definitely feel like it was a step up from the last few in that elements of the book have clearly stuck around in my brain better than the earlier ones.

I'm also reading this book, which is pretty damn interesting:

Book of Tells (http://www.amazon.com/Book-Tells-Peter-Collett/dp/0553814591/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1308076950&sr=8-1)

I liked it OK too.  I like the whole Florida Wacko genre.  He should bring Skink back.
So then I read Karen Russell's Swamplandia and enjoyed it until about half way through then did not enjoy the second half.

Have you read any of Tim Dorsey's or Paul Levine's Florida wacko books?  Good stuff!

Skink inspired me to tie myself to the center span at the top of the Card Sound Bridge when Hurricane Charley blew through.  Unfortunately Charley blew through Cayo Costa instead...   ;D

I've always been drawn more to the Travis McGee side of "Florida" novels. For a while that meant James W. Hall and Randy Wayne White. I always preferred RWW and Doc Ford over Hall's Thorn, but lately both have been wearing thin. Shame too cause I loved the early novels

Yes to Tim Dorsey, no to Paul Levine so far.
That reminds me of the time I was hitch-hiking across the country and thought it would be cool to see a hurricane, so I went to Galveston.  Fortunately the hurricane went to Corpus Cristi.  That was Celia.  In 1970.  I could be part of the Florida Wacko genre.

I read "One Second After" sometime last year and really enjoyed it.

If you liked that one, I think you would really like "Patriots" by James Rawles. It's pretty much a doomsday book, about the economy crash. There's been a group of survivalist in northern Idaho, preparingfor it for years, and when crap hits the fan, the guys are ready. It's a VERY good read. What I really like about it, you can easily see it happening tomorrow.
Also, Critical Mass was very good, if you like end of the world type stuff.

Thanks!  The local library doesn't have Patriots so I put it on my future reading list, but they have Critical Mass.   I'll pick it up when I pickup a couple of books for my trip to MI next week

Pete Brown - Hops and Glory.
Great fun and quite educational too. Only problem is I get an urge for drinking lots of IPA.

Omar Khayyam - Rubaijaat.
One thousand years old persian poetry about being merry and getting drunk on wine (or IPA...).

I finished this while in several airports Sunday and Monday.  It's a great historical novel.  Really interesting all the way to the end.  There are two, maybe three stories going on through the book, each one a good read by itself, but together even better.

I really enjoyed Joseph Boyden's "Three Day Road", http://www.amazon.ca/Three-Day-Road-Joseph-Boyden/dp/0143017861.  It was a really WW1 novel about an aboriginal soldier returning from the war with an addiction and a whole bunch of demons to deal with.  Very good book. Also really liked the "The Curious Incident of the dog in the night time" by Mark Haddon http://www.amazon.ca/Curious-Incident-Dog-Night-Time/dp/0385659806.

Problem is, I don't have much time to read but I listen to a lot of audiobooks when I'm driving or flying.  Mostly classics though.  On my iPod right now are:
Moby Dick
Siddhartha
Heart of Darkness
Green Hills of Africa
Several Bill Bryson books (great travel writer - very funny) including "A short history of nearly everything" that I can probably recite from memory.
and Adam Carolla's "In 50 years, we'll all be chicks" which isn't teaching me anything but I agree with most of what he has to say.

Confederacy of Dunces is such a good book. I don't know exactly what it is about it that makes it so good but I have read it three or four times not counting listening to the audible version. It makes me cringe but in a good way.

I have overnight fire watch at our Spencer Beach campsite tonight.  I just bought and downloaded a copy to my iPad.

Thanks for the recommedation on Confederacy of Dunces

I have overnight fire watch at our Spencer Beach campsite tonight.  I just bought and downloaded a copy to my iPad.

Life is good!  I've got two lines in the water, a jar of white dog to sip on, a sky full of stars overhead, and a new book to read through the peace and quiet of tonight...

Hawaii!

It's an intriguing read. And funny.

I'd be outside looking at the stars with a beer in my hand right now but the skeeters would tear my ass up. So I'm running out and adjusting (moving) the sprinkler on my vegetables during commercials.

I think that book is required reading in Central Florida. Lord knows it squicked me out when I read it as a kid.

What's on the shelf right now: (and by the shelf - I mean on the bed to be swept to the floor in the middle of the night)

Fuzzy Nation by John Scalzi (a re-imagining of H. Beam Piper's "Little Fuzzy") - I really have a soft spot for Scalzi thanks to Old Man's War (which is truly awesome)

Black Hats - A Tale of Al Capone and Wyatt Earp - Max Allan Collins (under a pseudonym) - same guy who wrote Road to Perdition so I really can't wait

The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss - Newish epic fantasy novel. Stumbled across it because he interviewed my favorite "Urban Fantasy" author Jim Butcher at Comic con. (And of course I just tore through "Ghost Story", Book 13 of Butcher's Dresden Files series)

Also going back through the Travis McGee series, reading "A Patriot's History of the US" to be followed by a re-read of "A People's History of the US" (If my brain survives the idealogical whiplash, I should be stronger. :) )

Drew, put the others aside for later & go right to The Name of the Wind. The 2nd book, The Wise Man's Fear, is out now as well.
Name of the Wind is f**kng awesome. Wise Man's Fear was good but not as compelling. Still, can't wait for the next one. Rothfuss is excellent.

I read it when McCoy AFB was still active. During the Cold War, B52s and KC135s were constanly flying in and out.  I lived in Conway so I saw them fly over.  The KC135s fully loaded tore holes in the sky when taking off. Incredibly loud at 110% throttle.

That book scared me pretty bad too when I read it back then.  I read it right after I read On The Beach by Nevil Shute.

Reading it now it seems pretty naive.

If you like memoirs I cannot recommend The Glass Castle high enough. It was written by Jeanette Walls.

Go The F**ck To Sleep was hilarious especially with Samuel L. Jackson.

Yeah, I was born in Pine Hills the year before they decommissioned McCoy. So no active memories for me, but of course Orlando still have the NTC until the 90's so still a target!

Reading it now it seems pretty naive.

Oh yeah.. you'll be safe in Ft. Christmas when nuclear war happens! :)

If you like modern urban fantasy then just about anything by Tim Powers. BTW the new Pirates of the Caribbean "On Stranger Tides" is based on his book with the same title. A long time coming.

This one's been quiet for a while now (I'm ignoring the Warning above)  but with vacation etc coming up, I'm wondering what everyone is reading and looking for some good suggestions for the cottage.  Personally, I haven't read much lately.  About time to get back at it.

Been into the Jim Harrison novels. Have recently read "Returning to Earth", "The Summer He Didn't Die", and "The Farmer's Daughter".

Recent non-fiction was "To Forgive Design: Understanding Failure" by Henry Petroski. This one goes into failure analysis of major catastrophic events in the last 20 years. One thing I found interesting was his observation that major bridge failures happen about every 30 years. He attributes that to that being the length of a career, and the new engineers have not learned all of the assumptions and limitations of a design family, and it gets pushed past the limits. He speculates that the next major failure will be in a cable stayed bridge or a large stressed concrete bridge. A book written by an engineer, so the engineers on the forum should find it interesting.

Pretty funny look at the middle of story most of us know the beginning and end of.

Read this a little while ago myself.  Funny, but also very real and human...if that makes sense given the material.

I never have time to read in summer...unless I try really hard.

I am gradually reading a few lines of this:

Glutton, demon of destruction, symbol of slaughter, mightiest of wilderness villains…

Larry McMurtry's Lonesome Dove.

The best western ever written, and one of my favorite novels of all time.  I've heard mixed reviews of his other books from the series, so I've avoided them.  I don't want anything to tarnish my Lonesome Dove!   ;)

I didn't love SoL, it was "OK" but by far my least favorite. Lonesome Dove is a masterpiece IMO. Comanche Moon is great, but not a solid home run for me. To each his own.

But seriously, if you like LD you should check out the "Richard Sharpe" series mentioned above. Short novels, but they draw you into total absorption.

Mitch Rapp was my summer read for 2010.  I read Transfer of Power through Pursuit of Honor (10 books) back to back.

When The Last Man is released this fall I plan to read American AssassinKill Shot, and  The Last Man back to back.

Even though Term Limits is not a Mitch Rapp story, I enjoyed it too.  It was fun to go back and see Vince Flynn developing the stage and characters for his Mitch Rapp series.

I haven't read any Dirk Pitt stories yet.  I've gone through the Isaac Bell and Fargo series and am half way through the Oregon series.  Not quite Vince Flynn, but good stuff none the less.

I might have to look into some of those suggested here, I have been looking for something new to read.  As I said above, currently trying to read the Killer Angels by Michael Shaara.

Some of my favorites, which have been mentioned I think, but worth noting:
A song of ice and fire series (Game of Thrones) - George RR Martin.  One of the best series I have ever read.

The Dresden Files - 13 books, and Jim Butcher continues to amaze me how he can keep things fresh and continuously develop the characters the way he does.

The Kingkiller Chronicles (Name of the wind/Wise Man's Fear) - Patrick Rothfuss.  Could not put it down.  Want the last book soooo bad.

It's a burden for sure, but he can ride the coattails a little.  Do you think that Mike had any help from his father for the start of the series?  Jeff at least grew up in an environment that will take his writing to the next level much as the printing press did for the rest of us.
