Title: AHA Conference Talk - Power Points
Post by: love2brew on June 23, 2011, 05:41:08 PM
Does anyone know where (or when) the power point presentations will be available from the AHA National Conference?

It was an awesome event but I just couldn't take notes fast enough!

Thanks

All I can tell you is that at the beginning of the week the email went out to speakers to make sure their presentations were available for posting. I sent mine off then.

They're being solicited now. We didn't have time to collect them onsite. Thanks for sending yours Denny!

Mine is still being edited for f-bombs.

I have to add them into the slides to give the appropriate flavor.

I'm sure they were saying "furkin", not the other thing.

Are you saying people actually used that word at a professional conference? Doesn't sound like anything I ever attended.

Sorry, that wouldn't justify it for me. I use the word myself, but there's a time and a place for it and a conference isn't one of them in my opinion.

I guess we won't be seeing you in Seattle then.

I guess if that's what they think makes them look cool or makes their speeches better, then yeah, I guess wouldn't be interested. It's not allowed here, why should it be allowed at a conference? Displays immaturity to me and should be reserved for the bar or the street.

Rant over.

Which is why I went to Drew's session.    ;D

Besides, I'd seen Denny in Cincy.

First thing is no one's paying me to give a presentation. I volunteered my services.

The second is that we have to remember that the best way to educate is to entertain at the same time. If you make people laugh, they pay attention more, they learn more. (I could pull cites for this, but they're locked away in my partner's classroom for summer school). In my case, I tell jokes and I use judicious swearing in an empathic way to shock and spice up what could otherwise be a dry and very dull topic of conversation.

So yes, I swear and I joke about it and make it seem like I'm cussing every other word, but in reality it's a few well chosen spots to goose the audience.

Plus, I quote the great "Inherit the Wind":

"I don't swear just for the hell of it. Language is a poor enough means of communication. I think we should use all the words we've got. Besides, there are damn few words that anybody understands. "

If you think NHC is anything like any "professional" conference you've ever been to, then you probably don't want to attend.

Yeah, it's more like a bar, and he's already said it is appropriate to swear at a bar. :)

+1

Where can you go to learn, laugh and just have fun while tasting beer and mead all at the same time. The NHC is special in the sense that it's not your ordinary professional conference. It's one big party where we share our thoughts and ideas, increase our knowledge and have one hellava great time.

Hard to say but I'd like to of course.  I enjoyed a trip to Portland a few years ago and want to take my wife to see the Pacific Northwest and it spectacular scenery.  And I hear they've started making beer there.

I assume the reason swearing is forbidden here is not so much that the administration believe we ought not to swear here but more that they want to make sure that people can view the forum from work where it may be blocked if there are swear words. More of a practical rule than a moral one.

Also, if it is not clear, coat and tie are not required at the NHC.

Shoes are optional.
Red keds are pragmatic.

I believe there is a "no pants" option as well...

Damn Microsoft formats always stick it to me.  Because I have issues with opening various versions of PowerPoint (for instance, other than a font size issue Drew's presentation opens fine, but Jamil's is basically unreadable for me), I will be converting the non-PDFs into PDFs once I can get the copies I downloaded over to a recent vintage Microsoft Office-enabled computer.  If anyone else has these same issues, or if anyone associated with the conference has an interest in making them available as an alternate format download, I would be glad to send them the PDF versions I make.

In years past, I'm pretty certain the Powerpoints were converted to .pdf before being posted.  I wonder why not this year.

You can load the ppts into Google Docs and they convert them for you, no M$FT needed.
