Title: Name My Pub
Post by: bcnihart on December 29, 2009, 01:47:05 pm
OK, I have decided that home brewing is just not enough.  I am in the process of renovating an 1860s building along the Mississippi River in Minnesota and converting it to a brewpub.  I hope to be open by the spring of 2011.  First order of business is a name.  I am looking for ideas.  Reply to this post and give me your best shot.  If I use it, the beers on me (after I open of course).

How bout 'The Busted Nut'

Cause that is what you are going to be by the time you get it open.  :D

Don't have to be a jerk about it.  Besides, there is already a Busted Nut bar in Hastings, MN!

Uhhhm - he wasn't being a jerk at all. Relax, dude. It was a joke.

Without knowing anything about you or your interests its hard to suggest something that is meaningful to you.  Having said that, you could go for a British pub style name - The Something & Something (like Fox & Hound or Pig & Thistle) or even simpler like the Stag's Head or the Bristly Boar.

How bout 'Sarah Wipple's Pub'  or 'Whipples'? Cause that is the maiden name of Henry Hasting Sibleys mother.

I dont know. Not much to work with and I just want some free beer.

Dont do the English pub name thing. I hate those places that are trying to be English pubs. Its like being white with dreadlocks. Ja-fakein.

"Tool Shed". Think of the decor you could go with. Also, "Honey! I'm going to the Tool Shed." That was going to be my band in High School...if I had any talent.

Sticking with politics use Jesse THE BODY Ventura. "The Body Shoppe" has a nice ring to it, but I think I've heard that one somewhere. _____'s Riverfront Pub?

Tool shed sounds like a male strip joint. Like where you'd go to see Chippendale dancers or something like that.
Just call the place "Depot" if you want to give every guy out there an excuse to stop in.

Background information:  The building was built in the 1860 in a town called Reads Landing.  It is located at the mouth of the Chippewa river and Lake Pepin.  Location is right on the water with a Burlington Northern rail line about 40' infront of the building.  Area is historic for shipping/logging.  Located between Lake City and Wabasha in SE MN.

Along the same lines..."I Can't Believe Al Franken is Our Senator Pub"

Too bad you won't have it up by this summer for the NHC...Good luck with the venture!

Logging...hmmm.  Sawmills?

Shipping...hmmm Depot, Docks, Quay?

What about Sawyers Quay?

Or you could emphasize the region like others said.  Nordic Pub

Either way -I'm one of an army of jealous guys...

How about "The Broken Tooth Brewing Company"?  Broken Tooth (Katawabeda) was perhaps the most celebrated Chief of the Chippewa (Ojibwe) people.  See here: http://www.sandylakeojibwe.org/katawabe.htm

You might also consider something river ("The Barge Inn"), or railroad ("The End Of The Line") related, as these would provide a lot of other terms and phrases that could be used to give themed names to your beers.

Below is a link to the MN Historical Society.  They have pictures of Reads Landing from the 1870s on.  My building is the one to the far left.

Beautiful building.  Will you be able to have the brewery area near one of those wonderful large windows in the front?
I don't have any ideas for a name (don't know the area) but I wish you much luck on your venture!  Very exciting.

Crap...NOW that will I call my band if I ever learn to play guitar? I know I'll never be a male stripper, at least not one anyone wants to see.

TN Julius? (you seem to be a fan)
AirForce? (no actual guitars)
KnotStrippers? (descriptive, eh?)

So do you like any of these names? There are some good ones.

Personally I really like The Busted Nut and I cant believe it is already taken. Great name for an American brew pub and even better for the kind of place that has free peanuts with shells all over the floor. Although peanuts are not nuts at all, they are a legume. Just doenst work the same if you say, The Busted Legume.

Anyways. The Pufferbelly sounds nice too. :D Especially if the food is good. If it is called the PufferBelly you can set up an O gage train set running around the ceiling or something. Plus a steaming locomotive will make for a great logo and sign.

Back in colonial days early 1700's in this country, Bars/Taverns were called "Ordinary's".....I put my
belief in the KISS (keep it simple) philosophy...

How about ...insert...  "Yer Name's"    Ordinary

Edit: found this...
14) noun, a) a meal provided regularly at a fixed price b) the inn providing such meals

The general atmosphere of your pub should have a lot to do with it...if there is any sort of thematic strain to it (what sort of food is served, general decorating or atmosphere, what kind of beer in general) you should go with something along those lines.  If it is going to be a more conventional American brewpub (ie., some sort of spinach dip with chips on the appetizer menu, jalapeno poppers, burgers and pizza, etc., and an american pale ale, a wheat beer, and a dry stout at least always on tap), then you have to get more imaginative and the regional history associated with the building would be my first guess.  Explore the history of the prior tenants, perhaps.

From my screen name you might guess I'm a Parrothead so I would recommend using a Buffett song for your pub.  Some suggestions:

Bama Breeze (North)
Boat Drinks
Bank of Bad Habits
Mental Floss
Nautical Wheelers

Good luck and Fins Up!!

\p*yoob\ ???? Seriously?
Wouldn't he just serve Coke in a can then?
Kinda limiting the audience.

Meh, they lost me when they crossed the line BEYOND the line that shouldn't be crossed.
Until then, it was mostly funny. I get that it was a joke - just wanted to know where you got it from.

What line did they cross?

Maybe I shouldn't ask, cause for my taste there are NO lines for comedy.

If I even describe it, I will be asked to remove or modify the post. Search for March 8 Family guy. It's just stopped being funny to me even before this one as the creator keeps testing the limits and pushing the envelope of what's acceptable. I'm not saying take it off the air, I know how to use the remote to change the channel.

never saw that one - I basically only watch it in on DVD - only live TV i usually watch is football and Foodnetwork.

Back to the topic.  How about something as simple as:

The (insert town's name) Local

or Poor (insert name)'s Pub

I like Das Boot, but that would have to be an all German theme - and you'd need all the glasses to be boots - which would be cool.

Das Boot makes me think of my old Commodore 64.  Ah, the good old days.

Reads Speakeasy on the Landing

Black out all the windows, and get a massive front door to keep the coppers out.
