Hi everyone! I finished my defense less than an hour ago and am dropping stuff off before going to the party. ;D
I probably won't be around until tomorrow, there is Deus to be opened and other things planned.
-
congrats!
no idea what Deus is... ???

I've dropped one but never opened one.. ;D
Congrats!!! What did you defend?

What did you defend?
the proper classification of wet and fresh hop ales... :D
-
Congrats Tom!
-
mmm Deus
well-deserved Doctor!
-
Congratulations!

I would think his PhD thesis defense was what Tom was talking about. Big congradulations! Do we have to call you Doctor now?
Deus is a Belgian beer made in the fashion of a champagne, very dry that one.
-
What to go, Tom! Party like it's 1999....waidaminnit....
-

yes, I know - tschmidlin will get the joke - he got pretty animated about defending the definition of fresh and wet hop ales on a thread a while back - I was poking at him a little.. ;D
-
Congratulations!
-
Way to go, and you get a new lab coat (as my dad always called his gown)

Right on Herr Doktor! Congratulations!
Looks like those jiu jitsu lessons came in handy after all! :D
-
Congratulations!!!
The closest any one in my family has come to being a PhD is Post Hole Digger.
-
Congrats. I wasn't going to have a beer tonight, but this calls for a celebration! Gonna hit the taps now! :) (thanks for the excuse!)

Me too . . so down the pie hole with the Alaskan Smoked Porter clone. :P
Tom, can you advocate this?? "A beer a day keeps the Doctor away . . ."
-
Congrats! Now that's a reason for a party, cheers.
-
Tom, can you advocate this?? "A beer a day keeps the Doctor away . . ."
Probably can unless the "doctor" is a beer loving mooch! :)
-
Saweeeeeeet! Long hours do pay off?? We all know hard work does not.... ;)
Kudos
-
Congrats Tom!
Education is the best provision for old age. ~Aristotle ;)

What if he's a time lord?
Tom, you aren't "the" doctor are you? I've heard there's been a regeneration....

That's not the only thing that guy said that was wrong, either. ;)

;D Man, I snorted hard on that one.
Anyway, wow a defense is a great thing to be done with.
So what was your field of study?
-
Way to go Tom. Congrats!
-
Awesome! Dr Schmidlin. Has a ring to it.
Piled Higher Deeper ;)
-
Way to go!

Congratulations Tom.
-
Congrats! That's a huge accomplishment!

Congrats Tom!
After an ordeal like that I'd hope we wouldn't see you for *several* days.

Now THAT would be cool! Maybe instead of Dr. Who, Tom could be Dr. WHAT??

If he's a Saints fan...
Dr. Who Dat?

It depends on the doctor. If there's beer to be had, I might show up on your doorstep :)

Yeah, here's a "Dr. What??" for you . . . the title of my dissertation is:
"Characterization of Familial Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Associated Mutants of the Human CuZn Superoxide Dismutase Monomer by Molecular Dynamics Simulations"
;D
It's not the greatest title in the world but it is accurate and I was on a deadline so it's what I'm stuck with now.
-

umm they're wet ;) congrats tom
Dammit! The ale might be wet but the hops never were unless it had been raining. I know you're just trying to wind me up, but it works. :)

:o holey moley, backpedaling already? wowza that doctoral achievement takes over fast.
hehe, just ribbing you a little. 8)
Anyway, I am {edit: um still} curious of your field of study.
I think folks that have PhD's and goats on their chin are just automatically cool.

I do disease research, my PhD is in biochemistry.
In the case of my dissertation, I looked at the structural changes to a protein caused by mutations. The mutations cause ALS (aka Lou Gehrig's disease or MND for those in the Europe). Using computer simulations we can look at the atomic level and see the effects of the mutation on the protein structure. It's especially important in this case because there is a gain of toxicity instead of the usual loss of function.
My next project involves a different protein and a different disease, but will use a similar approach. I'll be joining the Dept of Bioengineering as a postdoc, and partnering with a yeast lab in the Dept of Pharmacology for experimental work based on the results of the computer work.
-
Interesting. Seems like good life work.
Congrats on the postdoc!
So how does Lou Gehrig translate into MN in europeanish?
I bet that was not one of your defense questions. ;D

In Europe, ALS is included in a group of diseases called Motor Neurone Disease. I wish that had been one of the questions. ;D

"Characterization of Familial Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Associated Mutants of the Human CuZn Superoxide Dismutase Monomer by Molecular Dynamics Simulations"
Oh man, really? I've been working on writing that up too. Dang! You beat me to it. (only I spelled out copper and zinc, and mine have lots of mers)
Jeeze Tom, it's no wonder you drink!

What's your excuse? ;) ;D
Like we need a reason beyond "it tastes great and makes me feel good". ;D

Congrats...get a job...no, I mean a real one... ;)
My major professor once said, "The best thing to get out of graduate school is yourself."
-
I do disease research, my PhD is in biochemistry.
Now you've done it...don't be surprise if a bunch of guys come up to you at NHC next year and show you body parts and ask if it's infected. ;D
-
just wanted to offer my congrats, and thanks for helping the medical community.

Almost went into bioengineering too.

It's not published yet, but you can get chapter 2 here:
Structural Changes to Monomeric CuZn Superoxide Dismutase Caused by the Familial Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis-Associated Mutation A4V (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2749781/?tool=pubmed)
Once the dissertation is published I'm going to write up some of the chapters and submit for publication in peer reviewed journals.

Very impressive work! :)
Looks like all the hard work has finally paid off.

C'mon now we all know that just ain't correct! ::)
Tom,
I find this fascinating...
Analysis of Pathology of Alzheimer's disease
under the microscope - with connections
established to DNA of Borrelia burgdorferi
Flagellin DNA - Specifically staining Alzheimer
plaques and GVB of Alzheimer's hippocampal
neurons. Neurofibrillary Tangles derived from
intraneuronal infection by borrelia in the
model of SSPE dementia with Alzheimer's
tangles in a childhood viral infection dementia.
Find the connection Tom....I think it is really the culpret.

Nope, just Weaze. ;D
Congrats, Tom. From what little I can comprehend, I can tell it's good work. Best of luck!
-
A little late here, but congratulations Tom on finishing your thesis and passing your exam! Hope your next step is not too far away.
Cheers,
Mike
-
Thanks Mike. :) I'll be sticking around UW for the foreseeable future, and have no plans to leave the area after that.
-
Great to hear! What beer did you celebrate with? Westy 12? Homebrew? All of the above and more? Hope our paths cross sometime soon!
-
Be careful what you wish for Tom!
"The Cure" (http://www.apeswillrise.com/)

I don't work on anything more advanced than yeast. ;)
I celebrated with Deus, which is fine but not worth the price IMO. It's a good show though, and worth it when the alternative is champagne. We went out to Big Time Brewery after that, where I had a few of their beers (they still have Old Sol ;D ) and called it a night pretty early, but then the Deus was cracked by 1 PM.
-
That's why you make your own!
Brut du Faucon (http://archive.maltosefalcons.com/recipes/20040101.php) (C'mon, you knew that was coming!)
-
Well, obviously that would have been better Drew, i know that first hand. ;)
But it's not like I had a bottle of it lying around.
-
I turned in 6 copies of my completed dissertation today. One for scanning into microfilm, the rest for binding. One each for the UW library, the department of biochemistry, my boss, my dad, and me. The degree will officially show up on my transcript as "conferred" in a couple of weeks, but as far as I know there is nothing left to do but wait.
My postdoc paperwork isn't worked out yet, so as of this Friday I'll be officially unemployed. I think they still expect me to show up for work though. :)
-
Microfilm?
You work for NSA?
-
Weird huh? ;D We all though so too, and the fact that I have to pay $70 for it . . . well, whatever. :-\
-
I have a microfish (sp?) reader at work to look up part numbers on old Mazdas, up to 1998. I'm always surprised at how many people have never seen one.
-
microfiche
Did you have to print it on acid-free paper too? They tap you for more extras than closing on a house.
Congrats. We may have to figure out a way to celebrate later this year...
-

This is what I get whenever I go fishing... :D

Have fun. I was stuck in that particular limbo the entire summer between undergrad and grad school. It did make for a nice first check once the office staff processed everything at the beginning of the fall semester though. ;)

If there were paper quality requirements, I missed them. I used our lab printer and printed the two for the grad school on plain paper, and the other four on fancy paper. That's how it was labeled anyway, someone put a sticky note on it that said "fancy paper". I was prepared to buy a the paper myself, but didn't have to. And I wasn't about to pay them to print it for me, $0.06 per page seems reasonable for black and white, but $0.49 per page for color? No way. I have a lot of color figures and tables.
I'm sure we can figure out a way to celebrate ;)

It will get worked out. Or it won't. ;) Something will if that doesn't though, I'm not too concerned. Yet. :)

This is amazing... I just put a sticky note on my board shorts that says, "fancy pants" and it worked! Now I can wear them when I go to the fancy restaurant for lunch.
Oh wait, this is Hawaii. Everybody dresses this way...
Never mind. ::)
