Title: Why am I still here?
Post by: MrNate on August 25, 2011, 05:11:01 AM
I haven't brewed a batch in over a year. At least. My stockpile is all but gone.  :'(

Why ask why?
Dammit Jim (Nate) you're a brewer not a philosopher!  Get brewing!

I've noticed that homebrewers tend to treat their status similar to the Marines.

There is no such thing as an ex-homebrewer. :)

I tend to go in waves.  One year I brewed 30 batches.  The next year, schedules changed and I only brewed 3.  Anymore I've leveled off at about 15/yr.

If you want to start up again, look at what is keeping you from brewing and find for a non-painful way to adjust that.  You'll be rolling again in no time.

That made me chuckle... Mostly it's the divorce and house sale sucking up all my time.

Nate, don't you a friend that brews?  Go to HIS house and you guys brew sumpin' (anything your ex hates).  Get AWAY from the house and the other things that are distracting you from brewing.  This $h!T has been going on for TOO LONG.  After all, you ARE a brewer!(dammit!)

I "slowed down" brewing once, but I got over it.

you might want to put that in the beer quotes thread, i could see it on a t-shirt  :)

mrnate, when life gets in the way of brewing, I start thinking about future brews.  I write recipes; I get inspiration from things I read, movies, things people say, conversations with friends, food I make/eat, etc.  For example, this year I've only brewed five times, 1-Janurary, 2-March, 1-April, 1-June.  BUT, I do have 12 beer recipes in what I call "my current recipe list," 10 recipes in my mead and braggot list and 44 recipes in my "to brew later" list.  It helps keep the spirit alive.  cheers, j

I've only brewed 2 batches since I've been in Idaho, almost a year and a half now. Since I don't have my basement brewery, I just can't get into it. Hopefully that changes once I get the brewery built onthe mancave.

I had some equipment issues around the same time, so I'm sure that contributed a lot. I'm installing a new water heater, and couldn't help but think about rebuilding my equipment.

I had a multi year hiatus on brewing as well, but I started again not long ago.  I never entirely gave up on the HBA crowd as these are the same folks that I started with back at NB.  I think of this place as a "little social club" where I kinda sorta sometimes fit in, brewing or not.

Don't let a lack of brewing stop you from posting.  The brewing comes and goes as time and interest allows, the people you meet tend to be more important in my humble opinion.

Seriously Dean, depending on the beer and the temp it could be just fine or even really good.  The best way to find out is to taste it!

I took a year off once when I moved to NYC because I didn't have the space (I lived in a tiny studio apartment with a mini-stove). When I got back into it, about 6 months after I left NYC, it didn't take very long for me to (finally) switch to all-grain, start kegging, and get a temperature-controlled set-up.

six inches of water in the basement. Lost a few shingles and thankfully this tree fell the other way. If not things could have been much worse.

I think this tree is gone too.

Anybody know what kind of tree this is?

It's a Locust tree. Not sure of the specific variety though. The Honey Locust is the most common variety and the fruit of it can, and has been used for brewing. Make sure that if you wish to experiment that it is not Black Locust because that variety is toxic.

Call me crazy, but that doesn't look like a honey locust tree to me.  The leaves are too big, and I don't see the thorns you'd expect on a locust tree.

That said, I'm just looking at pics and reading descriptions, I have no experience at all with these trees so you may be totally right.
wikipedia honey locust: "The leaflets are 1.5–2.5 cm (smaller on bipinnate leaves) and bright green."

I have honey locust in my back yard and based on the pictures, that could be what you have too.  You're leaflets look a bit bigger than mine but that could be from the different conditions in your area.  My trees do have spines but they aren't really that apparent on the mature trees, more obvious on the numerous seedlings that they throw up each year.  Does your tree have clusters of white flowers each spring?  Mine do which I'm sure is where the honey locust name comes from.  The bees love these flowers.

Actually, it comes from the nectar inside the immature seed pods.

Thanks guys.

No flowers on that tree, no thorns either. The leaves are about as big as the end part of my thumb. Ill take some more pics.

If it is a locust is that hard wood, Ill have to see if I can smoke with it. Never heard of anyone smoking with Locust.
Title: Re: Why am I still here?
Post by: woadwarrior on August 30, 2011, 03:23:43 AM
Locust is a hardwood. A few of the sites I looked at seemed to be of the opinion that it doesn't produce enough smoke to be useful for smoking, although I did see one forum where someone said they used it. I didn't find anything about smoking with Black Locust, so I don't know if it has the same toxins as the seed pods. You may need to do a lot more checking before using it for more than heating.
