Title: How about least favorite style of beer?
Post by: mikeypedersen on January 15, 2010, 10:56:49 PM
The only ones I can think of that I don't really enjoy are 1A, 1B, and 1C!

Hefeweizen or pretty much any wheat based beer.

I don't care for really sour beers, like Rodenbach Grand Cru. Acidity is good, I just don't want them to taste like salad dressing. Fruit beer is another turn off to me. I hate when beer tastes like fruit. I also don't care for "Lite" beer.

Sours, yuck. Taste like my homebrew! ;)
Mike I didn't see you at the Big Beers this year.

Fruit beers and English browns are waste of malt, imho.

whoa - never heard anyone say they don't like English Brown - never heard anyone say its their fave either - most people are kinda agnostic to that style.  interesting.

I can appreciate sours, I just would never brew one.

I don't like the weaker Scottish ales (/60 and /70), don't like the 1A, B, and C either, (tho D and E are faves) but I can't stand FRUIT BEERS.

Not a bourbon drinker, so anything that has been in a bouron barrel.

Just - don't - like.

FTR record I am marking up my enemy list. Hefeweizen haters, non-bourbon drinkers ... maybe this thread was a bad idea.  :P

Kidding, of course. ;) (I love Hefeweizens and, especially, bourbon - but I love you guys too.)

Fruit beers
BAG NASTY
North end of a South bound skunk nasty

I used to hate on Belgian/sour beers but have since grown up.

I don't know, some days nothing sounds good.   :o  Thin beers I'll drink but I don't like them nearly as much.  I had a couple of blueberry wheat beers by Leinenkugle(sp?) this fall and it tore my intestines up for a couple of days... so I shudder now whenever I think about a wheat beer.   >:( :D  I wasn't impressed with the fruit in it either.  But with that said, sometimes I like the esters provided by yeast.  ;D

Yeah, I couldn't make it. I didn't even get to enter a beer in the comp.  :(
Hope you guys had fun. Everyone I talked to had a blast. Hopefully next year!

Non-sour Belgians in general. Any fruity estery. I can sample them and critique but
when the opportunity for a beer arrives, Something hoppy please.
I am ok with lambics and sours though. Figure that one?!?!

Any Alt beer that I make! (Three so far.)

I've had Alt fresh in Germany and canned elsewhere in Europe, and thought it was pretty good.

At home though, it's a style that continually challenges me.

My Kolsch-style brews are good, however.

Prrobably wheat beers. It's not that I don't like wheat beer because I won't turn one down... I like to have one once in a blue moon. But they are just not my style.

Not a fan of  the hefeweisen with the clove/banana thing.  Belgians are not my first choice of beers to drink, although I'm doing my best to learn to appreciate.

Fruit beers & 1A, 1B.  Not fond of 1C, but Red Stripe is a guilty pleasure of mine on a hot summer day, but probably mostly for the stubby bottles.

Haven't had a gueuze that I liked yet but I do like most other sours and lambics.

I can drink lite lager occasionally but I'll never brew any.

First thing...what are 1a, 1b, 1c etc?
I really don't like flowers in my beer.  A local brewpub has been making beers with various flowers with the worst being one made with rose petals.  I felt like I was drinking perfume.

BJCP style references.  1a, b, and c are light, standard, and premium american lagers respectively.

I used to feel the same as many of you about hefeweizen, until I made one and had it fresh.  My immediate impression was that a lot of what I didn't like about the style was a result from age and poor storage... that said, my hefeweizen has never done well in multiple comps, but I like it anyways.  I felt the same about Koelsh (sp?), again until I made one, and it has been a regular brew since (and done well in comps).  I will even admit that I watered down a CAP (2C?), and it got a 1st place as a 1C, and I happily drank it.  That said, I have not started planning on brewing any 1A or 1B yet.

A lot of the beer I just don't like has obvious flaws related to age and storage.  My local shop sells belgians that are SO DAMN OLD that they barely resemble beer, and when I tell the beer manager they have turned the best they do is mark them down to $3/bottle.  That makes really great breweries look bad, because I have had a lot of those beers in great condition.  I don't know why we can take a $20 bottle of wine back to the shop and expect a full refund, but beer is somehow exempt.  Most beers I don't like are a product of poor storage.  When I take on the challenge to brew it myself, I am often pleasantly surprised.

Not big on saisons or geuze.  Don't like fruit based American beers.  Anything with "light or lite" in it's name.  Most beers made with corn or rice as an ingredient.  Green or clear bottled beers.  Crappy homebrew (it does happen, thankfully not too much though ;))

Not a big fan of SHV beers. I always brew one to enter into comps that I'll be judging, so as to escape having to drink them. Sound logic?  :D

Are you letting the Alt sit long enough?

3 months lagering is when its best for me.

it would be worth it to just submit ANY beer to that category to not have to judge it.  hell, bottle up your spent starter wort.

I really do think that sounds gross...I've only had one vanilla porter ever and it was Breckenridge Brewing's vanilla porter at the brewery in 2005.  I liked it then, but tried it again a couple years later and YUCK!  Same thing happened with Pyramid Apricot Ale.

I would agree with fruit beers.  I make an apricot wheat for some women folk, but I don't really care for it.  Also not a big wheat beer fan.  Don't care for Dopplebock much or sour beers.  Some sour beers I enjoy, but not enough to ever brew 5 gallons or even 3 gallons.

Depends on the situation. I love a good Belgian Dark Strong Ale, but would definitely not want to drink one after mowing the lawn on a hot Florida summer day. I would put 1a, 1b, 1c at the bottom of my list like many of you, but on that same hot summer day, a fresh, ice cold one can be rather refreshing (at least the 1c  8)).

+1 to this.  Also, I'm inclined to add "bottled commercial beers" to my list.  I'm too often disappointed because they've been somehow mistreated before I get them - old, oxidized, light struck....

This is a good call.  Man that stuff is disgusting.  I haven't had too many of them, but I really don't need to.  I guess I like to stick more to conventional styles.

Oh, and extract beer..... whoops. Did I say that?  ;)

Depends a lot on where you get them.  At the place where I shop, I've never gotten a bad beer, either domestic or import.

+1. I've had both experiences. You just need to learn the good places from the bad and stop giving the bad shops your business.

Oh, so this was a lie. ;)

Let me just say...FREAKIN' FANTASTIC!!!!!!!!!!  A totally delicious beer, perfectly balanced. Sour up front, but the the mango   kicks in mid palate. A throughly enjoyable experience.

Thanks so much for thinking of me when you sent them up. The mango strong was a real inspiration for me to try something crazy one of these days. When I do, you'll be sure you get some!

I have to throw in lite beers...lacking flavor, aroma, color, and alcohol...is that even a real beer if it's missing so much?!
