Kegging and Bottling / Re: New Kegs - Manufactured in India
« on: June 25, 2014, 07:21:32 AM »
I have used one of the Italian kegs for a couple years, and more recently acquired a brand new one made in India.  Right away a couple differences I noted was that the posts are not labeled in or out, and the posts I got with the Indian one had poppets that were not permanently installed into the poppets like my Italian one.

With the liquid dip tube, I find that I have to manually hold it in place by reaching into the keg while tightening the post, otherwise the dip tube will rotate around and end up pointed who knows where.

As far as welds, I have not noticed anything unusual about them on the indian one vs. the Italian one.  Overall, I find that they are nearly identical but for the differences in the poppets and the dip tube which are probably insignificant to most people, I just happened to take note.

Equipment and Software / Coleman redesigned the Xtreme coolers
« on: June 10, 2014, 11:04:26 AM »
Does anyone have any experience with the newer Coleman Xtreme coolers?   They look pretty much the same but when I looked inside one, the spigot looked a little higher up in relation to the channel than in the version we're all used to.  The walls also seemd a bit thinner.  I was wondering if anyone's converted one of these new models and how it's performing for you.  Here's what the new one looks like:

Homebrew Competitions / High Fill, is this a thing?
« on: May 08, 2014, 08:27:47 AM »
I got my scoresheets back from the Chicago area NHC.  On one or two of them on an area reserved for "Other Notes" or something like that I saw a note of "High Fill".  Now, I fill all my bottles using a beer gun and do not bottle condition at all.  I don't understand why the fill level on a bottle is a consideration at all.  I do not believe it affected my scores at all but I found it irritating that it was made note of at all.  Is this something judges are trained to notice?

I'm pretty happy with my scores, my pale got a 38, porter got a 37, and my imperial stout got a 43.  None of these advanced though.  I know they're popular categories, but dang, a 43 doesn't advance?

Equipment and Software / Re: Ditching the glass carboy...

I went from buckets to better bottles and more recently to glass carboys.  I love the extra bit of headspace and the ability to do a wild beer and not dedicate a peice of equipment to it.

Equipment and Software / Re: Hydroflask Growler Filler

A very cold growler filled with low serving pressure hardly produces any foam for me.  Foaming issues on growler fills come from either cold beer into warm growler or too high serving pressure or some combination of the two.

Yeah I was pretty surprised about the change too.  I'll probably test it again next year to see if it's more consistent  with the results I just got.

This is Schaumburg, Illinois city water which ultimately comes from Lake Michigan.  The samples are both post carbon block filter, and tested by Ward Labs.  Other Chicago area suburbs should not be too far off from this.

Equipment and Software / Re: Blichmann burner first impression

Really quiet and really fast. I wish I could meet a woman like it.

Man this almost made me spit out my lunch.  Love my blichman burner as well.  It's definately a huge improvement over my Bayou Classic SP10 in every way.

I wonder if that is the reason why there was a problem with a lot of people trying to purchase tickets. Scalpers had already accessed their code.

Yesterday I was ready and waiting when they went on sale and so was my brother.  We both had errors on our membership numbers from 10:00a.m. until right around 10:15a.m. and then both of ours started working at the exact same time.  I joined a couple years before him so I'm sure our numbers arent close together or anything.  I seems more like the ticketmaster system had an incomplete list of valid membership numbers.  Exactly who's fault that is I think it open for debate if that is the case.
