All Grain Brewing / Re: Hefeweisen seems wrong

I don't remember exactly what my efficiency was, by I did a double decoction, so I am sure that it was higher than my average of 75%.  FWIW - a single infusion of 157 is high for a hefeweizen I would shoot for around 152

Homebrew Competitions / Re: NHC 2016 Final Round scores
« on: June 14, 2016, 05:45:14 AM »
I got a 40 for my vienna and made it mini-BOS, but got bumped.  Only a 33 for my german pils, which always scores high 30's to low 40s in the first round, but never gets above low 30s in the Finals.

I've dumped a couple batches in 200+ batches, but only because I didn't like the finished beer.  I've never had an infection that required dumping.

Homebrew Competitions / Re: NHC Scoring and Awards

Myself, got a nice scoresheet detailing how my Schwarz was "way too roasty" while the other judge said it was "very smooth but lacking any roast"

...whatev, I'll take my 37 and try again next year.

I have read many of my scoresheets with this on there. One judge picks up astringency and the other says its creamy.

Last year I entered a bourbon barrel aged english barleywine, one judged noted that the barrel completely overwhelmed the barleywine, the other said there was no barrel character  :o

I'll be at NHC, but not sure about the Soper Tour yet. Depends on how a few things fall in my schedule. So much to cram into a few days!

Surely.  It's the way to Ninkasi though (if you listen to Soper lol)

Well, 3 of the past 4 Ninkasi winners were on the SoperTour. ;)
Who or what is Soper and what is the tour about?

I must be the 1 of the last 4, since I have no idea what the SoperTour is.

On the other hand, this year's NHC has an opportunity for true crap shoop in action. Cat 26 Specialty. There are 13 sub cats! 3 of each placing at each site for round one, means many of those sub cats will be at the final mini-BOS. If there is one world class example of each, or even just 9 of those sub cats... its just going to probably come down to which sub cats the mini-BOS judges tend to like better. Maybe they will medal three American Wild Fruits? Or maybe none. That will be a fun table, and I'll bet there will be some debate.

Cat 26 is by far the largest cat in the Northeast this year.  Not looking forward to that mini-BOS.

I usually set up the equipment the night before and grind the grains.  I usually roll out of bed at 6 AM, turn the coffee on and fire up the burner.  If I don't get an early start and know I won't get started until after 9 AM I usually won't brew.  I like to be finish by noon so I have the rest of the free.

48 for me, only missing Alaska and Hawaii.

Unfortunately, most of that travel was done before I discovered good beer.

Equipment and Software / Re: Which oxygen stone/wand should I buy
« on: January 20, 2016, 11:06:06 AM »
I have the same setup. I eventually plan to replace it with this
http://www.morebeer.com/products/oxywand-05-micron.html
I like the fact that the stone uses a flared fitting to attach to the wand.  A while ago I saw some complaints about other ones where the glue holding the stone to the wand came undone.

This is the setup that I have and it works well.  I also like the idea of being able to easily remove the stone and boil it if it needs it.

I tried it a few times on different styles, but never seemed to work as good as whirlfloc, so I composted the rest.

Ingredients / Re: Best Malt Brands
« on: July 01, 2015, 07:11:45 AM »
Right now in my bins I have Weyermann dark Munich, Best pilsner, Great Western 2-row and Crisp Maris Otter.  I've also used Franco Belges pilsner a lot when making Belgian beers, great malt.

Other Fermentables / Re: Ey! Where you get your honey at?
« on: June 23, 2015, 09:00:40 AM »
When I first started trying to find honey I went to http://www.honey.com/honey-locator/.  It was a great resource for finding local honey.

I haven't read Piatz' book, but I like Schramm's book.  I also think there is some great information in the BCJP Mead Study Guide.
