That may go down as the worst draft pick in history simply for what Denver gave away to gamble on Tebow.
Worse the Lawrence Phillips?

Worse than Heath Shuler?

Beer Travel / Trip To Belgium
« on: November 02, 2011, 01:15:53 PM »
Had our 3rd annual Tennessee Cigar and Brew Fest this past Saturday and had about 1500 attend . . That is very encouraging for the event's future! Anyway, I took a flight of 8 different Belgians that were received with much praise and compliment which always feels good. One of the brewers form the Memphis club mentioned a beer festival in Antwerp that happens in June . . I believe the Beer Passion Festival. I suggested to my wife that that might be a good vacation next year . . she can shop for diamonds, while I shop for beer! (sounds equitable to me  :D ) She said sounds good to her!  ;D

So, has anyone been to this fest? What are the language barriers to contend with in that area? Any info would be appreciated.

As a footnote, another guy from the Bluff City Brewers club brought a bottle of Westvleteren 12 to the Brew Fest which we shared . . . Simply sublime.

Don't suppose anyone knows a ringer recipe for this??

Equipment and Software / Re: Plate chiller
« on: October 13, 2011, 04:42:06 AM »
I bought a Therminator several years ago and it cools as advertised. What you want to do when using any plate chiller is stir your wort enough after flame out to create a small vortex, (similar to a stir plate) then let it sit for about 5 minutes to form a neat little mound of trub in the center of the BK's bottom. This will help keep 'some' of the debris from entering the plates.

The only thing you will note with a plate chiller is all the cold break ends up in the fermentor. Maybe not a biggie, just be prepared for it . . .

All Grain Brewing / Re: First Batch Question
« on: October 12, 2011, 03:22:59 PM »
I put roughly 1/3 of my strike water in as a foundation, then add all the grain then add the remaining water. Reasons . . .

When doing high gravity mashes that require the full volume of the mash tun, it lets the grain settle lower in the tun when doughing in, First time I added all the water then the grain I had grain falling out the top of the tun till it soaked enough water to settle.

My water inlet into my tun enters the top of the tun through a copper "T"  which has two 10" copper pipes with a total of a dozen drain holes. It spreads the remaining 2/3 of the strike water evenly across the top of the grain while the 4 motorized stirring propellers eliminate any dough ball formation. It worked so well the first time I did it, I do it that way for all my mashes now. The only variable is contending with the tun's thermal mass when the ambient temperature changes considerably, but Promash can compensate the numbers pretty well . .

I'll give you that . . .

I'm surprised the stands actually held up!  ;)

Uuuuhg. Steelers clobbered my Titans. Now I have to hear that crap from my BiL. And to think I hurried back from a canoe trip for that! Damn.

OTOH at least Houston lost.

EVERY team in the AFC South lost today . . .  :-[

I'm actually starting to feel sorry for Indy . . I mean being beat by the Chiefs???

Yep . . my brewing season is over as well.

Racked the Tripel to secondary last night and kegged the Patersbier. Next weekend will be the big push to get the last 30 gallons of  Blonde, Tripel and Wit into the kegs in time for the third annual Tennessee Cigar and Brew Fest coming up on the 29th.

Ingredients / Why Does Carapils Get a Bad Rap?
« on: October 07, 2011, 05:46:40 PM »
Just curious why I've seen a number of folks include it in their recipes only to be advised to drop it. I don't use it that much, but now I'm wondering why so much advice against its use. In its typical percentages, how much can it hurt a recipe?

BTW - hokerer is talking about the Canes at VA Tech

Thanks Carl, yeah college football.  Thought the fact I said Saturday would have made that clear.

I read right over the Saturday part. I guess I'm subconsciously programmed for NFL . . .

Yep, bringing homebrew to the pig roast tailgate at the Miami game this Saturday.  Doesn't get much better than that.

Sure it does . . the Dolphs could actually do something foreign to them and win!   :D
