All Grain Brewing / Liqueur Potion Clarification
« on: July 04, 2010, 10:04:46 AM »
Hey folks...

I am brewing the Christmas Ale from Mosher's, Radical Brewing and have a few questions with respect to the liqueur potion.

The recipe says, "Spices added to liqueur potion, 12.5 oz. (370mL) of this mixture added at bottling:

250mL Creme de Cacao
600mL Orange Curacao
50mL Benedictine
0.25 tsp black pepper
1.0 tsp vanilla extract...
...and so on.

I am a bit confused on this step. Does this imply that I concoct this entire mixture and draw off ONLY 370 mL to add to the bottling bucket?
Or, would the liqueur potion be considered the secondary that I add these spices too? Or, perhaps does it mean something entirely different?

Thanks in advance!

All Grain Brewing / Re: Step Mash Temperature Control

Thanks for the replies.

This weekend I used Denny's method of adding water until I hit 170. It seemed to work fine. I used tastybrew.com to figure how much water they recommended as a check. The amount of water that I used was within +0.3 gallons of what tastybrew.com recommended.

All Grain Brewing / Step Mash Temperature Control
« on: May 24, 2010, 04:46:47 PM »
Hey ya'll...

I've been having some trouble getting my mash temps where I want them. I'm mashing in a 5 gallon round Coleman with a SS braided hose. I was using 10 pounds of grain at a 1:1 ratio.

The mash was at 150F and I was trying to mash out at 170. I added 1.5 gallons of boiling water and it only raised the overall temp to 162. Is there a good reference for determining amount and temperature for step mashes?

Any advice?
