Commercial Beer Reviews / Re: Are there any good beer apps for Android?

I use Beer+. It has a barcode reader, photo incorporation, and lots of areas to comment on the different components of beer. It also has a 5 star rating system (and half-stars) that helps me out.

The Pub / AHA Pub Discount
« on: March 04, 2012, 01:29:47 PM »
I went to BJ's Brewhouse in Lewisville, TX last night and was told that they no longer accept the AHA card for any sort of discount! I wondered if anyone else has had a similar experience at another BJ's (making it a corporate-wide decision) or if my local one just needs to be taken off the AHA website. The bartender said the first time the managers quit giving discounts was about three months ago, so this is a pretty recent thing.  >:( :o :'(

I'm whipping up a robust porter partial mash this weekend!

Not yet but I hope to soon...just been really busy at work and at home lately.  My son is into DC Universe, but then he's only 9 and has all the time in the world.

How is STO so far?

I have a lot of fun with it. I did the free version, and it's entirely playable. It's a good time visiting things from the ST Universe, like Starfleet Academy, K-7, DS9, etc.

Anyone a closet geek like me and play Star Trek Online? There needs to be a fleet of homebrewers somewhere in the universe!

St. Arnolds makes good beer (although not a huge fan of the Spring Bock), as does Rahr & Sons. I really like their Buffalo Butt Red Ale.

I can't say I've played around with a bunch of them, but I do like BrewSmith's shopping list and brew day checklist functions. They seem clear and easy to use (after playing with it for a bit).

Thank Heaven I live in Texas, so I get full access to all of Shiner's wonderful creations! I took special note of the Munich malt flavor they use so often. I am waiting for the Ruby Redbird to come back. I loved that beer so much...I haven't been able to replicate it though, yet. Any ideas?

I used some of these suggestions in my last batch.

Equipment and Software / Re: Wall mounted bottle "tree"
« on: February 07, 2012, 04:10:54 PM »
Building a bottle tree is something that I keep as one of those projects that I want to do but I keep pushing off.  Are you thinking of building it for bottle storage, or also for drying?  I want to build one for drying and I haven't convinced myself what the best material would be.

If you decided on wood, teak is a very strong, durable option. Treated with either butcher block oil or solid coats of urethane, it would be waterproof enough to dry bottles without warping.

Is there space in there for a small CO2 tank or do you have to run it through the back like you have it? I'm thinking of something like that for myself.

I'd drink it. It's free, right?

The Pub / Beer Documentaries

I've recently watched two really good beer-related documentaries on the Netflix: "Beer Wars" and "How Beer Saved the World". Comments and suggestions on related shows?

I really enjoy going to the Flying Saucer. Granted it's a chain bar, but they have a huge selection of commercial beer from all around the world. I don't have much experience with local pubs and brews (yet).

I only drink my beer and free beer. My beer is served properly, and if it's free, take it and worry about hidden costs later.
