I cannot imagine that the hot water from your heater is suitable for drinking.

Well I won't be using it in my beer but why wouldn't it be drinkable? Other than potentially more sediment...

Hot water hose and spray nozzle ordered...

This will definitely be better than hauling fermenter and kegs to the kitchen to clean.

Dumb question...can I just attach a hose to my water heater drain valve (assuming the hose is rated for that temp) and have access to hot water in my garage when cleaning up after brewing?

That's like 2lbs per gallon of water. I bet he does 1g to 10ml and just wasn't thinking when he said 10.

I'll test unfiltered tap water first. If it doesn't detect it then poop.

If your filter wasn't removing the chlorine/chloramine you'd probably be able to smell and/or taste it. Which one does your water have? If it's chlorine, like mine, you can just leave your water out uncovered in a bucket overnight and the chlorine will be gone. Campden tablets also work if you have chloramine.

I think just chlorine.

I just figured this would be an easy way to see when I need to change my carbon filter.

That's what I needed to know, thanks!

I'd like to periodically make sure my carbon filter is still good. I see lots of chlorine test strips on Amazon but are these the right test for checking for chlorine in tap water?

Yeast and Fermentation / Re: Yeast Nutrient

After this presentation, I started using nutrients. There was discussion of Zinc in here, and also in a presentation by MaryBeth Raines.

I hope this helps.

Nice.

The BSG nutrient I usually use is the kind with a lot of dead yeast cells in it, I think. Certainly smells yeasty.

I'd have to take a photo. The center drain leads to this. It actually drains underneath the bottom of the mash tun. My friend has the 10 gallon version and this doesn't have an angle on his.

Anyone else here have one? If so can you confirm that the drain valve is supposed to angle down? None of the photos I find online have a good picture of it from the side. Their support staff says this is correct.

LOL Carlson and BSG both say 1 tsp per gallon. But now that I think about it shouldn't it vary by wort gravity also? Maybe they just want me to use a lot so I buy more.

What's the side effect of too much nutrient?

I wonder if I use too much. The bag always says 1tsp per gallon of wort. Seems like all of you use much less than that.
Is it the BSG stuff?

Yes. I ran out recently and lhbs didn't have any so I bought White Labs servomyces.
