As a new-ish homebrewer who doesn't yet have everything he needs yet, I would be very interested in what you guys develop; especially if it's fairly priced!

Like many, I have Mr Palmer and Mr Conn to thank for my "expertise". Recently I've been refining my mash and sparge techniques. Someone had planted the thought that frequently stirring would increase efficiency. Seemed to make sense. Then Denny suggested the max fun, max quality, max effective way of only stirring at dough in. By golly, it's true. My last brew was an IPA, 12# Washington Select, 1 1/2# Munich, 1 1/2# crystal 40, mashed in 6 gallons at 154° for 90 min. Vorlauff was beautiful with maybe three little grain chunks coming through. Efficiency was 80%, which it 10 higher than I usually get.

How would you approach this method for a step mash? Only stir when adding water?

You guys are most convincing! I've got to admit, my initial hesitation with BIAB was mostly due to lack of knowledge. After doing some reading, however, it really seems like it would work perfectly for my situation. I'm going to start with just straight BIAB, but I might go ahead and do the hybrid deal with the little 2 gal mash tun cooler.

Standard Disclaimer:
I apologize if this topic has been covered before. I gave the forums a quick search, but didn't find much.

Back story:
I recently "went all-grain" with my 5 gal setup at my parents' house (makes for a good excuse to get home and see everyone (I live ~4 hours away)). Problem is, as a newly-wed I am getting fewer and fewer chances to make it back 'home' to brew... Moreover, I have very little space to brew in the one bedroom apartment my wife and I live in. Due to space issues, we've decided to try brewing one gallon batches.

The Point:
Having gone AG on the 'home' system, I'd really like to keep it up with this one. Obviously, BIAB is an option, but I can't say that I'm thrilled about dealing with the bag. I'd rather just use a typical, but small, mash tun. I converted a 70-gal Xtreme (blue) cooler for the 'home' setup. Would this be a similar operation? Would I run into problems with the small size? Am I an idiot for thinking this would work? Would a SS braid, or a false bottom be superior? I don't have any experience with false bottoms, but I'm open to new things. Also, I'd like to keep this on the cheap (less than $65) if possible.

You can get 2 roller Monster mill for about the same price as Barley crusher.
MM is much better mill to my opinion.

I did have BK but now I have MM 3 roller.
This year I will put thru it about 16000 lb of grain.

Do you recommend the MM3 or the MM3 - 2.0? (http://www.monsterbrewinghardware.com/products_main.html)

How long are you waiting between changing the temp of the kegerator and pouring the beer? The air temp in the kegerator will change much faster than the temp of the beer (primarily water, by weight), because the specific heat of water is very high.

I'm another one who has tried both ways and settled on no rehydration.

So, Rehydrated < Dry

But is a yeast starter better than just sprinkling the dry yeast in? Or is that really just to boost pitching rate for higher OG beers?
