I don't really know either, but my impression is that it would be daunting task. I have been in the process up building an electric HERMS system, and have the luxury of living a couple blocks from the St. Paul Northern Brewer retail store. Overall it's a great spot, but their handle on inventory management absolutely blows. I was trying to buy some 1/2 NPT male stainless quick disconnects, and dropped by the store. They had zero in stock, although their computer said they had 6. The employee checked their computer to see the inventory of their Minneapolis location, and told me they had like 16. I went over to Minneapolis and they had 6 of them.

In my opinion, Northern Brewer is as sophisticated as any homebrew supplier, but even they are a long way from being able to report/manage inventory levels appropriately.

I think it's a cool idea, and I would be interested in a service like that. An additional integration for you to ponder though...

the actual inventory of the LHBS needs to be reflected when creating the recipe. It would suck to design a recipe using 5 oz. of Centennial, submit the order, and then arrive to the LHBS and find out there is no Centennial in stock. If I had known there is no Centennial ahead of time, maybe I would just hold off and brew the stout recipe I've been working on. Know what I mean?

It almost seems like you should just pitch your idea to a place like Northern Brewer, and work directly with them.

Anyways, it's the start of a good idea... and to me, it screams Amazon fulfillment center.

Are you going from a carboy to a keg?

If so, I have used the following system very successfully:

1. push a racking cane through one hole in one of those orange carboy caps with two nipples.
2. connect a hose to the output side of the racking cane.
3. connect a black keg connector (for beverage out) to the other end of the above hose.
4. connect that connector to the beverage out post on a purged and depressurized keg
5. connect your CO2 tank to the other carboy cap nipple and pressurize to 2-3 psi.

This will pressurize the whole carboy, forcing your beer out the racking cane and into the beverage out, filling your keg quiescently from the bottom, all under a blanket of CO2.

Jeff - I noticed in your signature line that you're building (or maybe you've finished building) a clone of The Electric Brewery as a pilot system. Just curious how much volume your system will handle. How big of batches are you/will you be brewing on the pilot system?

While it may not have the bells and whistles some brewers enjoy, this pot will work perfectly.  If it doesnt have a spigot attached they are easy enough to install with 20$ worth of SS fittings and a few orings.

TLDR Your brewery, your rules:)

Hey all looking for some perspective on boil kettles.

I'm in the process of stepping up to electric HERMS. Using keggles I already owned for HLT and MLT. I am going to buy a 20 gallon pot for the boil kettle.

So... I really can't justify spending a lot of money on the new kettle. I understand a thicker kettle will retain heat better and a thicker bottom will distribute heat better if your heat source is a burner underneath. But since I am going electric, the element will be submerged inside the kettle... so I don't care about heat distribution.

Can anyone make a case for investing serious $ into a nice kettle for electric brewers? Aesthetics do not concern me.

20 gallons, stainless, and it's actually thicker than some kettles that are double the price (Bayou Classic, for example).

Could you pull a decoction with pumpkin in the mash? That may be one way to hit mash-out temps without violating your tun's capacity...

Yeah, I think so. I have avoided decoction because it just seems like a pain. Also, it seems like only half of homebrewers mash out anyway, so I'm not going to stress about missing by a couple degrees on the mash out. Good thought though, thanks!

I brewed this last weekend. For the most part, it went well. I was worried about getting a stuck sparge with all that pumpkin, but not a problem with the rice hulls.

I assume you are cutting this recipe back to a 5 gallon batch. If not, I suggest you do since you mash in a cooler (unless your cooler is a LOT bigger than my 10 gallon).

I started my 120 protein rest at a water/grain ratio of 1 (which is pretty darn thick). The 154 sacch rest was hit correctly, but I was only able to get the targeted 168 mash out to 162... because my cooler was unable to accommodate the additional HLT water necessary to raise all the way to 168.

Also, check out the Green Bay Rackers website... they have a great calculator to help you hit your mash temps.
