For the amount we use as homebrewers, the additional cost is moot to use the proper product.  Why reinvent the wheel?

62dF, Cotes de Blanc yeast, no nutrients.  If you want to go New England style, add brown sugar, raisins or dates, cinnamon optional

Too bad you ruled out the Southeast.  Bluffton is one of the top 5 places to move , and a top place to retire.

Had DB Vienna a few years ago after they won the medal at GABF.  It was good.  Had it last summer again, and was disappointed.

With what you have, you're half way there.  Make a Denny mash tun, get the fermentation bucket.  Invest in a grain mill if you are going to do all grain.  Get fermentation control (refrigerator & temp control) before spending serious coin on Grainfather.  Good thermometer & a refractometer too.  Money is better spent on keg set up too.

Going to do a bacon wrapped loin for the Fourth.  Anything special to do with the cabbage on a smoker?

Atlanta has been mentioned.  We looked at Savannah in the past when the conference was much smaller.  Real problem is GA beer laws and homebrew.

First, Welcome to the obsession and Thank You For Your Service.

There is a wealth of information on this board.  Feel free to ask the questions, no matter how basic.  I will recommend you getting intouch with the local homebrew club in North County.  The comraderie and help they can give you is invalluable.

Oh, BTW there's a little gathering in your neck of the woods this week ;D

Homebrew Clubs / Re: AHA Club Insurance Program
« on: June 06, 2015, 07:02:04 AM »
I've had several club members ask me whether we should enroll in this.  To date, I have responded to them that I didn't see a particular need.  There is no social host liability in Maryland, and most of our events are at members' homes, or at other venues where we are invited to do demonstrations and where I believe the property owner's liability insurance would apply to anything that happens.

But, I'm an insurance claim guy, and before I can give any of our members what I think is a reliable answer, I would need to see the policies, both the general/liquor liability policy and the D&O policy.  I haven't been able to find it...are they available for review?
I think you can get a copy from Luke.  For $3.50/member IMO it's a good deal

While not on the trolley line, Point Loma Seafood is good, fresh, and has Sculpin on tap.  (no credit cards)
