Ingredients / Re: Michigan Hops Farms Expanding.
« on: February 25, 2015, 03:11:56 PM »
Just read the article in the Record-Eagle about the new hop farm.  It's a group of investers from the Traverse City area and is called "MI Local Hops".  They will eventually plant 400 acres on an old abandoned golf course
in Wiliamsburg, MI.  They are about 10 miles from where I live, might be my next career move.  They have all the hop support post piled up near M-72 highway when I drove by last.

I also caught that segment at the end, noticed two carboys on tables fermenting away!  Also noticed no brew haulers for safety and the carboys werent covered to protect from light!

Excellent malt!  I made Denny's amber and it was the best amber I've made yet

Ingredients / Re: when to add dry hops

Has anybody tried dry hopping in the bottle?  Put 2 or 3 whole hops in abottle at bottling time.  Sounds like a great experiment?

General Homebrew Discussion / Re: Buying crushed grain on line

I was buying crushed grain from Midwest or Northern brewer for years until a local homebrew shop opened up.
Never had any quality issues, I kept it stored in a tightly sealed storage container in my basement until ready.

All Grain Brewing / Re: BIAB: What's necessary and what's not?
« on: August 13, 2014, 02:23:44 PM »
#1 important thing is the BAG!  I got a supposedly biab bag from a home brew shop and it was way too coarse and let in way to much trub and grain particles and the wort was very cloudy.  Look for a high quality fine mesh bag large enough to fit your kettle/vessel.  I use a 5 gal stainless polarware kettle with a ball valve.  I also use a small winch type device to suspend the bag over the kettle for draining, works great!

Beer Recipes / Thoughts on a Wheat IPA
« on: July 28, 2014, 02:35:40 PM »
I'm thinking of a wheat IPA for some easy summer drinking...Has anybody made one and any advice on the grain bill and best yeast for this style?  I was thinking 50/50 wheat and pale malt, some munich and crystal.
Would wy1272 be a good choice or wy1010?  Thanks

Kegging and Bottling / Re: Bottling questions
« on: July 28, 2014, 02:20:24 PM »
I dont know if this will eliminate the foaming, but I use a small section of tubing about 2 to 3 inches long connected to my bottling wand and to the bucket spicket, thus eliminating the 4 feet of hose.  I just put a bottle up to the wand, fill and cap.  Much easier than moving the wand and hose to each bottle.

Simple solution:  Grow your own if you can!  You can even get them tested for Alpha acid content nowadays.
I've won many competitions using homegrown hops.

All Grain Brewing / Re: cold-weather brewing
« on: February 28, 2014, 02:31:31 PM »
I hear you about this crappy cold weather in Michigan!  I"m from the Traverse City area and it was 20 degrees below zero last night!  I brewed 3 weeks ago in my unheated garage (19 degrees) using BIAB so it cut my time in the cold, but was hard trying to maintain temps... At least using extract it should go fairly quickly.  Dress in layers and take plenty of inside warm-up breaks!  You should try it at least once to challenge yourself ha ha!

General Homebrew Discussion / Re: Bo-pils frustration (saaz problem??)
« on: January 04, 2014, 03:23:36 PM »
Just noticed this topic in the forum and wanted to say this is not an isolated incident.  My last 2013 Bo-Pils also had a wierd off flavor, somewhat chemicle or cleanser taste?  My previous batch in 2012 was right on.
I'm pretty sure it is a bad batch of hops.  Hopefully no problems in 2014!

All Grain Brewing / Re: Decoction yields greater?
« on: December 28, 2013, 03:28:16 PM »
Thanks for all the responses.  I just racked to secondary and the F.G. was 1.016, ABV about 6.5%.
Can I still consider this an Oktoberfest with the higher gravity or is it closer to a Maibock/Bock?
Just wondering what style to enter in a competition.

All Grain Brewing / Decoction yields greater?
« on: December 16, 2013, 03:46:03 PM »
I just brewed an Oktoberfest last weekend and used a two step infusion with a single decoction at the end for the saccharification rest.  My target S.G was 1.058 and ended up with 1.066!  I've read on the forum that decoctions can increase your yields, is that what happend?  Is an 8 point increase about normal?
Will have to take this into account on my next decoction brew!
