Amazing how prophetic this book was, having been first published in 1985. Note that this was much of the inspiration for Roger Waters album "Amused to Death".

I had tried several "different" beers (read as "not Coors") throughout college but never really had any interest in anything (other than Coors) until the summer of 1990 when I was working out of the Twin Cities for the historical society. One Saturday morning a friend took me to the Summit brewery. When we got done with the tour we were each handed three tokens for three free beers. My first pint was Summit Extra Pale ale. I took one sip and my eyes opened like they never had before. Delicious flavours! I was hooked. And that was just the beginning . . .

Actually, shortly after this happened it was reported that the site was swarmed by people with ISU Cyclone plates and stickers on their cars. Not a single bottle of Bud Lite was left for the clean up crew . . .

As above, but for me its roasted barley, not black patent, that defines stout / porter boundaries

Indeed, you are correct, roast barley does produce a flavour any would recognize as being a stout. In fact, I would abstain from using either of these two in my porters.

Dave, when it comes to an American Stout vs. a Robust Porter, I have always contended that a porter, any style of porter for that matter, should not have black patent in the grist bill. If it does, it's a stout. That's just my opinion, but one I feel is accurate.

I've got a Char Grill with the side firebox that I use frequently for smoking. I've never done any mods to it and it works fine as-is for me.

Late to answer, but I got the Q300 a couple years ago for the reasons you state. Easy to come home, turn on the gas, and be cooking in a matter of minutes. It's also easy to take camping, tailgating, etc. I've got a large rubbermaid container that I put it in with a couple bottles of LP and all my grilling essentials. Set it in the back of the truck or trunk of the car and go. I've been very pleased with mine and did spring for the adapter hose to use a 20 lb. tank.

Tomorrow night I'll be kegging a barleywine that I brewed over the xmas break and an Irish Red Ale brewed a couple weeks ago. I also need to rack a batch of orange blossom mead onto five pounds of peaches. Saturday AM I will be brewing my Simcoe IPA and using the Wyeast 1469 slurry from the IRA to ferment it. Sunday I'll be dry hopping a batch of Steam beer and a SNPA clone while drinking a delicious Summit Winter Ale clone. Life is good!

The step-bit/unibit is the way to go. It will cut a nice, smooth hole. Start with a 1/8" bit and just drill a small pilot "divot" so the step-bit doesn't wander on the surface of the kettle when you start to drill. Use plenty 3 in 1 oil and drill with low speed and pressure, if you go to fast the SS will heat up it will get harder to drill. Clean up the oil with oxyclean and a blue scrubbie. I have installed weldless fittings on a dozen or more kettles/fermenters/kegs for myself and friends and this method has always worked well.
