I brewed it for my annual fall fishing trip & one of  my buddies was hoping to have a coffee stout.
We never needed to add coffee.
It naturally has a coffee flavor that is just awesome.
Dang...I really oughta make that one this weekend.

Was it an over the top coffee? I'm not a coffee guy, but I can handle hints of it.

Great info fellas. The head brewer at my LBS told me that with the Belgians they do it's all about the yeast and temp control. For their strong golden they recommended finding the warmest spot in the house and leave it there for 2 weeks. It worked perfectly.

I wasn't born yet when they touched down on the moon, but I remember being in school and them televising the first shuttle launch. One of my teachers bought the 33 recording and played it in class when we couldn't go outside due to weather.

This recipe is a modified version of one that I got from another forum:

9# American 2-row
1.5# Flaked oats
.75# Caramel 60L
.63# Chocolate Malt
.5# Roasted barley
.5# Victory malt
.13# Caramel 120L
3 oz Willamette (4.5%) - 60 min
White Labs #WLP004 Irish ale yeast

May not be 100% authentic (high IBUs), but it turned out to be an amazing beer.

Thanks for the info Kit. Maybe I'll have to do a double batch just to see which is more my thing, lol

Looks like Redlight Redlight is doing 'something'.  I think 'something' involves putting a few Belgians on tap that normally aren't (Chimay White, Kwak, and Ommegang Independence Ale).  They usually have a few sour ales on tap (they had a 'Sour Day' about a month ago).  Never had Kwak or the Ommegang brew.

I think this is the first year for the Ommegang Independence. It will be one of the chosen few on tap at the Taphouse on Thursday. I can't wait to give it a go.

They make cheap stick on thermometer stickers to slap on the side of your fermenter that do the trick

I had no idea but my local watering hole is doing a nice Belgian themed night on Thursday to commemorate the occasion. 6 or 7 different beers on tap and a couple more in bottles to help set the mood. Anybody have anything similar in their area or doing something on their own?

Welcome aboard Dunkelben. This has quickly turned from a hobby into a passion for me so be wary, lol. In fact I recently downsized 3 other hobbies to concentrate solely on brewing. Good luck to you.

Thanks for the info guys. Since I haven't delved into this style before I think I will stick as close as my LBS can get me to Jamil's version in Brewing Classic Styles.
