General Homebrew Discussion / help with partial mash to all grain
« on: May 16, 2018, 03:21:55 PM »
Hey All,

A few months ago I brewed a partial mash from beersmith called stuck farbucks coffee porter. It contained 6 lbs of DME. I would like to this brew again but do it all grain. Is there a way to figure out what grains and weight to replace the DME? the Recipe is here in case that helps.

Thanks!

General Homebrew Discussion / can mount pump vertical?
« on: March 23, 2018, 11:00:49 PM »
My new brew-stand was delivered today!  Looking it over, the best setup for me would to mount my riptide pump vertical on one of the legs. Will a vertical mounting still work or does the pump really need to be horizontal?

thx

All Grain Brewing / stir grain bed when sparge?
« on: March 23, 2018, 03:17:57 PM »
When I was taught all grain by a friend I was told it was important to not disturb grain bed when adding the sparge water. But been watching vids and reading lately and it appears some do stir up grain bed when adding sparge.

Have I been doing it wrong?

thx

Hey All,

When I first got into all grain, there was an app out there called sparge pal. You entered grain bill and desired mash temp along with a few other things and it would spit out how much and what temp your mash water should be and then also tell you how much and what temp sparge water should be. It always worked well. At some point the app disappeared from iphone and no longer can find it.

Can someone maybe point to similar program out there or a formula I can calculate myself?

Thx

General Homebrew Discussion / recirculate mash?
« on: March 21, 2018, 06:51:31 PM »
Hey All,

I have been all grain for a while now and after mash time, I typically send that straight to brew kettle. I read a little about I should recirculate the mash a bit before sending to brew kettle? If true what is this doing?

thx

General Homebrew Discussion / vanilla bean question
« on: November 15, 2017, 08:30:39 PM »
I brewed Denny's BVIP last weekend and in recipe it says to add the vanilla beans and all to secondary. My question is should I in some way try to sanitize the beans. Or could I use the Bourbon addition to sanitize them?

thx

General Homebrew Discussion / Help picking out a New Years Day party brew
« on: November 14, 2017, 02:59:41 PM »
I been asked to brew a beer for a annual NY day party. Just one beer and personal taste cover a large range of beers. So I guess I am looking for a "neutral beer" for lack of better names. In other words, not a hoppy IPA and not a Robust Porter.

Any ideas?

Thx

General Homebrew Discussion / first octoberfest
« on: November 11, 2017, 01:32:03 PM »
Hey all

I brewed my first octoberfest two weeks ago. After I saw some activity in primary, I brought temp down to 50f. A few days ago, it looked like all settled to bottom and wort was clear. I raised temp to 65. Today I checked spg and it is 1.023. Recipe says fg should be 1.015. I taste rested from thief and taste ok but has a "sharp" zing to it. Right now, the beer will only be 3.5%. Anything I can do to get spg down? more yeast? more time?

thx

General Homebrew Discussion / brew bag question
« on: October 15, 2017, 04:18:30 PM »
Hey all,

I am going to use a brew bag in my cooler (mash tun). I have read that I may end of with more wort than usual due to wort draining out of bag when pulling it out of mash tun. Although in one way this is good, I guess it would also dilute the wort down some. Should I adjust my mash sparge water volumes to compensate for this?

thx

General Homebrew Discussion / Blichmann Riptide, bummed
« on: October 09, 2017, 05:02:46 PM »
Hey all,

In August I purchased a blichmann riptide pump for my homebrews. Yesterday, I was doing my 5th brew since getting it and had a problem keeping it running. When it would stop, the only way I could get it going was to take head off and reassemble it. Each time, there was nothing in the impeller other then beer or water, no solids. It really frustrated me when I was trying to cool the wort down and had to keep pausing to get it going again.

Has anyone had a similar experience or any idea of what to look for? I called Blichmann but the CS guy is out all week. :(

thx

General Homebrew Discussion / cpvc pipe size for mashtun cooler?
« on: October 06, 2017, 12:27:02 PM »
Hello,

I am building a manifold for the bottom of a cooler I plan to use as a mashtun. I have seen 1/4" and 1/2" pipe used for this. I was wondering if one is more used than other or more of a 6 cents 1/2 dozen thing.

thx
