Ingredients / Beer + Spirit
« on: August 21, 2010, 08:06:13 AM »
I was thinking about enhancing the rum flavor in a beer... with... well actual rum.

Has anyone experimented with adding a bottle of rum at bottling/kegging? Or in the primary or secondary?

Is this an awful idea?

Just something I'm toying around with.

Equipment and Software / Best Kegerator Deals?
« on: May 15, 2010, 12:19:57 PM »
I'm looking to get a Kegerator, but I'm not finding any great deals out there.

It would help give me a good frame of mind to hear what y'all are using, what you paid for yours, and where you got them.

Just a quick survey on who (if anyone) uses Conical fermentnters.

Is it worth the money?

If I'm looking to step up my brewing is this a good step forward?

General Homebrew Discussion / 100% head
« on: April 11, 2010, 11:33:43 AM »
I poped open a few bottles of my latest brew and each one erupted.  The entire bottle turned to foam.  Within in a minutes every ounce of liquid turns into foam.

I know I screwed something up, but I'm not sure what?

Any similar experiences out there?

Commercial Beer Reviews / Ommegang
« on: January 26, 2010, 08:43:24 PM »
I am so impressed with each Ommegang beer that I try.  I can't give this brewery enough credit.  AMAZING.

"Three Philosophers" may be one of the best beers I've ever had.  Rare Vos and Abbey Ale are up there also.

Ingredients / Yeast Nutrient
« on: December 14, 2009, 07:39:18 PM »
Is yeast nutrient really necessary?

I'm about a year into brewing someone at my LHBS recommended it to me for the first time. I asked myself, "if this is important why hasn't anyone mentioned it to me before?"

What does it actually do?

Ingredients / Peanut Butter Brew
« on: December 10, 2009, 04:08:16 PM »

I am going to be brewing a "Chocolate Peanut Stout" soon.  Has any one tried to brew with peanut butter at all??

My biggest concerns are a negative effect on head retention because of the peanut oil and salt.  I bought organic no salt peanut butter, but that doesn't take care of the oil.

I originally planned to add this at the end of the boil to ensure it mixed well, but someone told me that all the flavor will be eaten up in the primary fermentation.  But if I add this for only the secondary fermentation than I fear the flavor won't take well. Does anyone have any good opinion or advice on when or how to add it??
