General Homebrew Discussion / Bottling day on first batch
« on: January 16, 2016, 12:09:10 AM »
Well folks, bottling day is over.  It was quite a task doing it solo,  but I made it work.  I do see how people mentioned that a 1 gallon batch is just as much of a process as a 5 gallon, only difference is I get more out of a 5 gallon batch.  I was only able to get 6 bottles of Caribou Slobber from this one.  No matter,  it was a great first experience.  I really look forward to the next batch.

Now it's time to unwind a bit

Thank you again to all the advice and positive vibes.  Will let you all know how it turns out.

General Homebrew Discussion / Finally Brewed First Batch
« on: January 15, 2016, 06:19:17 AM »
Hello fellow beer lovers.  I finally got to brewing my first batch a few weeks ago.  I Brewed a 1 gallon kit of Caribou Slobber from Northern Brewer.  It was quite the experience with some mishaps, but I've been told that can happen on thr first batch.  First issue was my kit came incomplete but since it was my first kit I didn't know the difference.   When I finally got to brewing and following the instructions I found that I was short a grain bag and 1 pouch of hops.  I had already busted thr kit open and had to find a way to fix it so I can go about my journey.  I went to the homebrew store and bought a 1 ounce pouch of hops.  When I got home I realized I forgot the grain bag so I decided to use a couple of coffee filters tied at the top.  It seemed to do the trick, had some grains come out of the filter, but I figured I could avoid those when I siphoned.  My second issue was I didn't have a scale so I couldn't really measure my hops.  I kind of had to look online and see what people guesstimated.  Well see how it turns out.   Have any of you ever had to do any tweaks like I had to?  I'd really like to hear it. So far really enjoying the process in homebrewing.  Just wanted to share my first homebrew experience with you all.

This was the carboy a few days after brewing.

Any thoughts, advice and words of encouragement are welcomed.

General Homebrew Discussion / How to store beer
« on: September 13, 2011, 08:11:03 AM »
whats up guys,

i had a quick question about storing beer.  i am going to be moving pretty soon and will have to get rid of my beer fridge.  so i need to know if there is a way to store beer that was once refrigerated.  i will need to store these in a storage room.  is there any correct way to do this without the pesky dangers of my gorgeous beers (ex. my dogfish 120 ipa) going bad.  any help on this would be greatly appreciated.  thank you in advance.

« on: May 07, 2011, 04:17:41 PM »
i got a real good deal on a 21 qt. ceramic coated stock pot.  some people have told me that this is a great way to start.  others have told me that i should have gone stainless steel.  i was looking for a well priced stainless steel stock pot, but they were all to expensive for me right now.  can anyone tell me what i should be careful for when brewing with this pot?  any help is appreciated.  thank you.

i know this is going to seem like a really silly question, but here it goes...

i know that there is an expiration date on the liquid yeast.  is there any harm in using expired liquid yeast?
