Yeast and Fermentation / Spilled Yeast while making Starter
« on: November 12, 2010, 09:00:59 AM »
Hey guys. Was making a starting yesterday evening with abotu 1 quart of water and a half cup of DME, just before adding the yeast I made the genius decision to shake the vial before opening and I lost probably a little more than 1/3 of the yeast to spewage/spill....

I poured what was left into the starter bottle. The brew that I will be making has an OG of 1.070. Will i need to add more yeast to the starter due to spillage?? or should i be fine since one of the main reasons starters are made is to increase cell count any way?

I know i should just not worry and grab a homebrew....but i'm Just trying to decide if I should pitch whatever the starter gives me, or start all over... Any suggestions? i mean is there a minimum amount of yeast required to make a starter of that size? This is only my second attempt at making a starter. I have two days till Brew Day. Thanks for the help!

Ingredients / Palisade Hops

I have recently been given a pack of Palisade hop pellets from HopUnion. Has anyone every brewed with these before or know anything about them? I tried looking on the Hop character wheel from Brewing Classic Styles and it wasn't even listed. They have an alpha of 7.8%

Extract/Partial Mash Brewing / Krausen after 2 weeks?
« on: June 25, 2010, 01:10:48 PM »
I recently brewed a Belgian Wit partial mash kit from AHS with the 1% alcohol boost. 2 weeks later, there is still about an inch of krausen on the top of the beer and the airlock was still bubbling about every 15-20 seconds. The original gravity was supposed to be somewhere around 1.048 but i measured at about 1.051-52 which I think is due to the alcohol boost from AHS. The fermentor is sitting at about 67*F, and I am going to at least wait until the krausen drops until I take a hydrometer reading.

My first 4 batches lost the krausen in about 3-4 days and just thought it was odd it was taking so long. I was just wondering if anyone else here has had the same experience, or could explain why this has occurred for so long...

Hey Everyone,

I have been thinking about starting a project to build a homebrew system and am open to any ideas or suggestions. Plus I am just interested in looking at what other people have built at their homes!  Whatta ya got?
