Beer Travel / Good beer store in Little Rock?
« on: June 29, 2012, 12:35:45 PM »
I'll be in Little Rock tomorrow night (Saturday) and want to find a good beer store.

I'm specifically looking for 750 ml bottles of exotic brews ... Goose Island or Boulevard Bourbon barrel beers, Belgian style beers, etc. ... not your run of the mill beers, but ones that would be good for doing a beer dinner or sharing with a couple of special friends.

Also, are there Sunday sales restrictions in Arkansas? Should I be sure to make my purchases Saturday night?

Homebrew Competitions / 2nd Annual FRANKLINSTEIN Homebrew Competition
« on: September 20, 2010, 05:12:04 PM »
We are looking for entries and judges for the 2nd Annual FRANKLINSTEIN Homebrew competition will be held on SUNDAY, November 14th at Depot Street Brewing, 904 Depot Street, Jonesborough TN.

This will be an AHA/BJCP Sanctioned competition accepting entries in categories 1 thru 23 and special category 29, MONSTER Beers. This category is for beers made up of pieces and parts of two or more other styles. Why not just enter category 23? Because the highest placing entry in this category under 6% ABV will be invited to Depot Street to assist head brewer Michael in the brewing of a commercial batch of this beer.

All entries will be judged by at least one qualified BJCP judge and we strive to give you the best feedback that we can.

Registration is now open for entries, judges, and stewards. ONLINE REGISTRATION ONLY to save trees. Full details are at

Homebrew Clubs / Club legal status
« on: November 17, 2009, 07:40:27 PM »
We recently held our first homebrew competition, and during registration we received checks made out to our club name (State of Franklin Homebrewers). Today when we tried to deposit them into our 'club account', which is actually someones secondary personal account with me as a secondary, the credit union would not allow us to deposit those checks. Something about looking like checks made out to a business.
They recommended we open a 'Doing Business As' account, which is still a personal account, but marked as DBA <clubname> and is subject to the same reporting as all accounts. This seems to imply that an 'individual' is doing business under that name, and may lead to questions by the IRS.
So how do other clubs do this? I've looked around on the site, and have seen a couple of articles about club financials, but it would seem to me that there would be a fairly standard process that the AHA could document and recommend for clubs. Would that be incorporation, registration as a non-profit, or something else? Some of those processes seem like an awful lot to go thru just to be able to deposit checks made out to <clubname>.

Does anyone have any profound revelations that they'd like to share? How do you all handle this problem?

Homebrew Competitions / A category for competitions?
« on: November 05, 2009, 04:52:48 PM »
Might be a good thing to have for folks to solict judges and entries for their competitions.

The entry window closes this weekend for the birth of the FRANKLINSTEIN Homebrew competition hosted by the State of Franklin Homebrewers on November 14th in Jonesborough, TN. This is an AHA/BJCP Sanctioned event accepting entries in all Beer categories, including a special MONSTER BEER category (sorry, no meads or ciders at this time).

We need more judges and stewards ... judges and stewards can register your entries by the deadline and bring them with you on the 14th as long as they arrive by 8am. We hope to have almost all the judging done in the morning round, have lunch, then play and drink beer in the afternoon while the BOS judges are doing their thing. Some kind of continental breakfast will be provided, as will lunch for judges, stewards, and staff.
