Homebrew Competitions / BJCP Regional Rep Elections
« on: April 26, 2016, 09:40:56 PM »
Fellow BJCP judges - If you live in a region where the Regional Rep is up for election and you haven't voted yet, please take the time to do so before this coming Saturday. These people are willing to spend their time over the next three years to address the needs of the BJCP. Surely we can spare 15 to 30 minutes to review the candidate statements, make a choice, and cast a vote.

Homebrew Competitions / NHC Final Round Sign Up
« on: May 20, 2015, 11:53:30 PM »
Hello all,

We’re still in need of judges and stewards for the NHC Final Round Judging in San Diego on June 11th.  If you’re planning on attending the conference or if you able to travel to San Diego that day, consider signing up.  Working with several high ranking and experienced judges and staff from all over the country is quite an experience.  This year’s goal is to get all of the category judging completed in the morning session, leaving the best of show judging for the afternoon and allowing folks to enjoy the Homebrew Expo or the San Diego craft brew scene.  Judging assignments will go to the highest ranking judges first, Grand Master, Master, and National in the past, but there is a chance that some Certified judges may be called upon.

If you have an entry in the final round you can sign up by logging into the NHC website here https://brewingcompetition.com/FINAL/index.php.  You can indicate your willingness to judge or steward by clicking on the Edit My Info link under the My Info and Entries menu item at the top of the screen.

If you are not a final round participant you can sign up here https://brewingcompetition.com/FINAL/index.php?section=register&go=judge.

Hope to see a lot of you in San Diego!

Homebrew Competitions / NHC Homebrew Competition Presentation
« on: June 16, 2014, 09:20:11 AM »
Hi all.  Below is a link to the presentation Brian and I did in Grand Rapids last week.  The AHA will eventually post the presentation with the audio but I thought it might be a good idea to post the presentation here and generate some discussion.  I'm sure there will be some agreeing and disagreeing.  All I ask is that we keep it clean and productive.    :D

For all you competition coordinators and organizers out there, a new version of BCOE&M has been released with some really nice add on features and changes:

  • Added the ability to cap the number of entries.
  • Added custom winning category functionality.
  • Added registration windows for judges and stewards (now separate from regular entrants). Comps can now register judges and stewards before and after the entry window.
  • Added a new public page: Volunteer Information.  Communicate directly to the Volunteers in addition to the Entrants.
  • Accept payments via Google Wallet (in addition to PayPal).
  • Added another bottle label option that includes special ingredients (if any) on the label itself. Useful for Category 23, for example, and custom categories.
  • 16 other fixes.

I personally coordinate two competitions (Midwinter and German Fest Stein Challenge) and webmaster another two (The Schooner and Belle City Winter Warmer) using this package and it saves us a ton of time over paper form submissions, managing a competition, and communicating to everyone involved.

Wood/Casks / Cask Bung / Shive Removal
« on: June 30, 2012, 07:51:04 AM »
Anyone find a good method yet for extracting bungs or shives from empty casks?  I asked a few people at NHC and no one has found a really good removal method.  I found the following on UK Brewing Supplies but was wondering if anyone else had a different suggestion.
