Yeast and Fermentation / Sulphurous / Egg Smell In Starter
« on: May 29, 2015, 02:27:25 PM »
Just looking for a few opinions.
I usually use a vial of White Labs or a WYeast smack pack to make a 1 litre starter and then pitch this in to my wort or split it in to 3 parts for storage. I will then use the splits to make more starters when I have a brew on.

This week I used the dregs of a bottle of my HB to make a small 200ml starter (1040 wort made with DME) and it absolutely stinks of sulphur (eggs). The yeast is Wyeast 1469 and the beer has been bottled for around 5 months. The beer tastes as off flavours or infection.

I stepped the 200ml up to 1 litre and whilst the smell is still present it is much reduced.

I'm just looking for some reassurance that the starter is okay to use?
I crash cool and on brewday decant off the liquid and then suspend the yeast in a small amount of the wort I've just made before pitching in to the full batch.

I'm assuming that the sulphur is present due to the small quantity of viable yeast left in the beer and therefore stress put upon it during fermentation of the small starter??

Any further thoughts would be appreciated......thanks 8)

Equipment and Software / Any Speidel Braumeister Users On The Forum?
« on: April 21, 2015, 04:11:56 PM »
I've just placed an order for a 20 litre Braumeister ;D
Just wondering if there are any users here??
How are you getting along with the system......pros/cons?
I'd also be grateful if anyone has or can point me in the direction of any BeerSmith profiles that they are using with success.

Needless to say; I'm looking forward to getting my hands on it and I'm hoping it will save me a little time on brewday......particularly on the clean up side of things.
I used to do overnight mashes, but my wort was coming out far too fermentable and the beers were excessively dry as result.....I've read that long mashes in these units present no such problem as they can hold their temperature.

The Pub / Please Help Me Plan My Trip To The US
« on: January 14, 2015, 02:07:09 PM »
Hi Guys,
I hope that you will be able to help me with some thoughts and recommendations.....geography, transport & accommodations within the US. Must see's/do's, probably should avoid etc etc. I will apologise in advance as this may be a long post.

I've wanted to come to the US now for a few looks like I will be able to this either later this year or more likely in 2016.
There are 3 things on my, food and craft beer.
I don't have an affiliation with any team.....but I do love watching games that are held in San Francisco; the place looks great on TV.
The food thing comes from somehow getting an interest in Diners Drive Ins & Dives (don't laugh).....most of the places this guy seems to go look awesome :D
The craft beer.....well I shouldn't really need to explain that.

My trip will probably be 10 days in total.....take off a couple of days travelling on either end, so I will have 7 or 8 nights on US soil.

From my initial research there is not much difference in the price of flights from the UK to either the East or West coast. Usually around £50 extra for a return flight to LAX as opposed to New York.
I've also looked at flying in to one coast and returning from the other.....but the price was utterly prohibitive. Internal flights seem to be reasonably priced.

I appreciate a bit of sunshine, so the West coast appeals. I know there is a lot of beer related stuff out that way.....I'm a regular BN listener so maybe those guys have skewed my view somewhat.

So what suggestions do you folks have?? Are internal flights and multiple destinations doable on such a short time frame or do you think I would be better concentrating my limited time over a smaller area?

Am I missing out by only really considering East or West coast?? What else is there?

Any pointers and tips would be much appreciated and thank you in advance for any help forthcoming.

Zymurgy / Zymurgy Log In Issues - ipad / ipod
« on: November 03, 2014, 03:39:36 PM »
Hope someone can help me.
I can no longer log in to the Zymurgy app on my ipad or ipod.
When I joined the AHA I downloaded the app to both devices and logged in without any I can't log in on either device and I get the message 'unable to log in as use markpotts'.
I'm in the UK if that makes any difference?? Both devices have latest OS.

Any advice would be appreciated. TIA  8)
