Ingredients / Grain
« on: June 29, 2017, 06:58:33 PM »
So my LHBS closed because they extended too much credit to local breweries who didn't pay up.  Sad too because they had just expanded;  not enough capital I'm sure.  Where do you get grain? Looking took buy a base malt for multiple varieties and specialties for color/body. Suggestions?

Kegging and Bottling / Counter-pressure bottle filler

Anyone use one? If so, which one? There are a lot on ebay, most come from China😐. I don't think I can make one for less than I can buy it due to raw product costs. Suggestions?

Yeast and Fermentation / Yeast Starter Question
« on: November 19, 2016, 05:13:49 PM »
According to Beersmith, I need a 1500ml starter. Is that the end volume after adding the DME and sick pack? It doesn't clearly show how much water to use, just the amount of DME for the starter size.

Equipment and Software / Electric Brewing
« on: September 13, 2016, 01:49:51 PM »
I have a RiMMs tube system and I have been very happy with it. The heating element is 120v. I'm having issues with buildup on the element. It is a stainless steel element from brewhardware.com and I believe it is 1100w. What do you use to clean off the buildup?  I don't want to use a wire brush. PWB doesn't seem to cut through all of it. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

All Grain Brewing / Off flavor, more like burnt
« on: January 28, 2016, 04:03:33 AM »
Have a question as this is the first time for me.  I make a black ipa and it has a burnt flavor. At first I thought it was my heating element in my rims tube. Then when I went to my HBS to get more grain, I found that the scale doesn't register until you get to 1#. I remember adding chocolate malt and the scale kept going to zero, this was before my primary grain. I think I had almost 1# when the recipe called for 8oz. If I had too much chocolate would it give the beer a burnt flavor?

All Grain Brewing / Ugh
« on: February 28, 2015, 04:31:35 AM »
Ok, rushing to do a batch for a competition, always a big mistake.  Put my false bottom upside down, several stucks. First time using my mill, maybe too fine of a crush, then I remembered the upside down bottom. Fly sparse into the kettle, boil, OG spot on. Pitch the starter, rolling in 12 hrs. Wednesday, four days after brew day, SG is at 1.016! Last night try the gelatin fining. Today kegged with dry hops (whole), tomorrow, I will taste/check carb levels, and then bottle three on Sunday for the competition delivery.  Pretty crazy how it went. It's a local brewery competition that I won last time so hopefully I will win again.  News to come....

All Grain Brewing / Rimms question
« on: February 22, 2015, 04:08:41 AM »
Do you have the temp sensor on the output to the top of the mash or do you have it on the input from the bottom of the mash?  Did I do this right?

Equipment and Software / Three tier brew stand
« on: October 26, 2014, 07:19:03 PM »
Anyone have a good plan/diagram for a three tier gravity fed brew stand?  I have a welder so I'm not worried about having to weld.  I'd prefer to use metal for strength and durability.  I have a RIMMs system ready and also have a pump for my chiller.
