Ingredients / weird flaked barley
« on: December 29, 2014, 11:17:52 PM »
Hello everyone, has anyone had flaked barley that smells and tastes like rawhide?..I usually get my ingredients from online vendors like NB,morebeer and never had a problem..2 days ago i stopped into a LHBS and gave the clerk my list of items and did not think much about make a long story short i dumped the wort before it made it to the kettle..Im just curious what made that FB so ruined the whole batch it gave a overwhelming rawhide smell/flavor to the wort..mind you this is a recipe i have brewed for years with 100% success..i dont think it was stale cause it was crunchy..i wonder what was up with that FB

General Homebrew Discussion / Another water question
« on: November 22, 2014, 11:03:23 PM »
Alright so im trying to get an understanding of water for brewing and how it effects beer flavor..My question is can you brew a fine beer that lacks certain ions? For example say you have 50 ppm calcium and 60 ppm chloride but zero everything else, would the beer suffer? Do you absolutly need sulfates or chlorides or sodium etc..please excuse me if the question seems dumb..I want to brew a boston lager tomorrow but do not have any gypsum to add sulfates i only have calcium chloride on hand

« on: November 21, 2014, 03:14:55 PM »
Im pretty new to lagers and my question is what gravity should you start the D rest..For example say you brewed a 1.050 beer and your target FG is 1.010 start the D rest at 1.020? Or at the very end of primary? I hear alot of different opinions on the subject

Yeast and Fermentation / overpitching question

Would like your opinions on overpitching..I know the best way is have the proper pitch rate but say you overpitched by 60-65 billion cells..that would not have a negative effect on your beer right?

General Homebrew Discussion / Prepping hops for winter
« on: November 18, 2014, 09:28:33 PM »
I just cut down my hop bines to the ground and put a few inches of mulch and a slab of slate over the mulch..This should provide good protection from the winter right? Any other methods to keep the hops good for the winter will be appreciated..cheers

General Homebrew Discussion / Question regarding water
« on: November 18, 2014, 06:36:33 PM »
Hello everyone..I am just starting to get into water chemistry..I am using bru'n water spreadsheet....I am brewing a amber lager style beer this sunday..I am gonna use distilled water and treat with calcium chloride..according to bru'n water 2.3 grams of calcium chloride in the mash and 3.1 grams in the sparge water   will give me  54ppm of calcium and my chloride to 95.6 ppm the rest of the ions are zero..My cations to anions is 2.7 to 2.7..I am looking to have a balanced profile in the beer..I am a noob when it comes to water chemistry so if someone can tell me if this makes sense or if something is off..There is a bit of learning with this bru'n water
