General Homebrew Discussion / Re: Fastest Turnaround Time?

Great timing.  I need to have some beer ready for a party in a week.  Some good ideas in this thread.

Kegging and Bottling / Re: straight beer out tubes in ball lock kegs?
« on: October 11, 2010, 01:32:23 PM »
So I have been fermenting in corny kegs.  Works great - I'm never going back to carboys.

Sorry to hijack your thread, but I have to know -- are these 5-gallon Cornies?  Is blowoff a problem?  Do you use Fermcap-S or just settle for less beer?

Thanks ...

I use 5 gallon cornies - I ferment 4 to 4.5 gallons in each one.  Sometimes I use Fermcap, but it isn't really necessary.   Try it - you'll like it.   :)

Kegging and Bottling / straight beer out tubes in ball lock kegs?
« on: October 05, 2010, 03:33:09 PM »
So I have been fermenting in corny kegs.  Works great - I'm never going back to carboys.  I cut and partially straightened one curved dip tube to get above the trub and yeast.

Someone told me that the straight dip tubes from pin lock kegs will fit the ball lock kegs. Is that true?  If so, I will get some of those and change them as needed depending on what's in the keg. Thanks.

I have used that exact combo a couple of times.  I'm betting you'll like it ...  :)

Equipment and Software / Re: Easy vorlauf

Why vorlauf at all?

I insert the runoff hose into a nylon paint strainer bag. Just crack the valve open and start the runoff.  Continue to open the valve in small increments until it is fully open.  When I'm done I have less than a teaspoon of grain in the bag. No need to vorlauf, in my opinion.  :)

Ingredients / Re: Mineral additions for stout

Looks good.  I brew with well water - 289 ppm bicarbonate - makes a good stout straight from the tap.  Like a10t2 wrote, I would add some CaCl.
