What type of candi syrup?  Is it even a good idea?

It's a blood orange saison made with (surprise) blood orange candi syrup. The reco was to prime with some more of the syrup to bring that flavor profile back up.

Hive mind -- I have multiple questions about priming in a keg using candi syrup

Right now my beer is in secondary and cold crashed in a refrigerator (saison). The last batch of this recipe, I bottled some and kegged the rest and really prefer the bottle-conditioned beer to what's coming out of the keg. On a suggestion from a fellow homebrewer I'd like to try priming in my keg before hooking up my CO2 regulator.

  • How do I get the candi syrup to dissolve without introducing oxygen into the beer? Stirring with a sanitized spoon seems like a poor choice. At minimum, I think I need to bring the beer back up to room temp otherwise I fear I'll have a glop of candi syrup at the bottom of the keg. But how do I distribute the syrup, just roll and shake the keg a bit?
  • In the event adding the syrup stirs up whatever viable yeast is left, I assume I'll need to off gas but at what point do I worry about losing the desired carbonation? Or between low FG (1.006) and cold crashing this may be a fool's errand?
  • How do I determine it's at optimum carbonation? Via my regulator? And once I hook up my CO2 should I just set the regulator to my desired psi or a lower level to just push the beer through my tap?
  • Any other tips or things I'm forgetting?

I think it has to be said that this arrangement could result in a lot of problems for you and the pub, including the pub potentially losing its license to sell.

Indeed, a retailer cannot legally serve unlicensed, untaxed beer and homebrewers cannot legally receive any compensation (not just monetary) for their beer.

There have been several recent incidents where retailers have been caught serving unlicensed beer from local homebrewers.  The result has been much greater scrutiny of the homebrewing community by state alcohol control regulators.

OK, appreciate the feedback and I'll share back accordingly. Didn't realize my not compensated would potentially impact the retailer.

Hello hive mind -

A local pub wants to put my beer on tap. Hooray! Of course, their bar draft system is all sanke fittings and I use cornies at home. I read through some of the threads here about the challenges filling, cleaning, pressurizing a sanke at home but didn't see anyone reference the EV Container kegs that seem to resolve some / all of those issues.

Who here has used their sixth-barrel option? Pros / cons?

I think the wisdom of crowds here will be "don't do it" but worth an ask. Looking in my basement for a beer to enter into competition, and the best one is currently bottle-conditioned in 22s. How much of an idiot would I be to open a few and re-bottle into 12s for entry requirements?

Thanks for the replies. I do have Palmer's book and will read through the referenced pages tonight. Sounds like I was on the right track with my guess.

Hi smart brewers,
After one too many issues with the false bottom in my mash tun (converted Igloo cooler) I'm trying a bazooka screen. A couple of batches later and while no more stuck sparges my efficiency has taken a nosedive. Have others experienced lower efficiency with a "BS?" The non-physics major in me could make some fake hypothesis about there being less surface area for wort to pass through but that doesn't seem like a good conclusion.

To those with the Barley Crusher, have you adjusted the settings or just been using it as it came out of the box? I have one as well that I bought about 18 months ago. Wonder whether it ever needs to be adjusted.

Equipment and Software / Yet another keezer question

Been doing my due diligence scouring all the posts here and elsewhere on chest freezer conversions as it's my summer I'm-not-handy project. Pretty much ready to go buy lumber and stain. I'm still debating whether to attach the collar to the freezer or to the lid, but my question is on a different, related topic.

What are benefits to two collars? I've seen some posts about inner and outer ones but having two just seems like 2x the ways for me to eff something up.

Classifieds / For sale: two Friday GABF tickets

A friend couldn't make the trip and gave me his tickets to sell. There are two tickets for Friday night's session: one AHA member entry, one non. And one ticket for the Farm to Table pavilion Friday.

Face value/ticket fees for the three are $185. All reasonable offers considered.
