Mashing high probably isn't the answer. I've had beers mashed at 160 then carbed like that and they are still very bubbly.

I think this is what I got http://www.amazon.com/00688-Household-Waterproof-Adhesive-2-8-Ounce/dp/B000KE4PBQ/ref=pd_sim_sbs_indust_10?ie=UTF8&refRID=0VGGHQ6WH0XAQ591KFH

You can find it at Home Depot, too.

Look for something that seals fish tanks. I had a problem with the insulating foam flaking off and making it difficult to seal the valve in my cooler. I put silicone sealer in the gaps, the kind that is food safe or safe for fish tanks.

All Grain Brewing / Re: Late Water Adjustment
« on: March 05, 2014, 04:28:06 PM »

An ATC function accounts for the probe's variation in pH reading as a result of temperature. It doesn't change the fact that the mash pH itself is also different at different temperatures.

Is there a formula that does compensate for this or do different grains vary from each other?  Also don't ph probes degrade when used in hot liquids?

Equipment and Software / Re: PBW 101
« on: March 05, 2014, 04:22:17 PM »

I speak from experience, but if you do not wish to believe it, by all means do not.  I know what I will and will not do again with PBW and am comfortable with my current procedure.
a simple google search will turn up many people who have ended up with something that looks like what you see on page 8 here.

The text under the photo says 'likely caused by' a high concentration of pbw for 8 hours.

I'm not going to argue that pbw can cause a problem but those are weasel words. They need to prove it causes problems. Why not work with 5 star since better bottles and pbw are a staple in just about every homebrewers garage?

Again, I'm not arguing with you or better bottle. I just would like clear evidence and not maybe it was caused by misuse of a cleaning product.

Equipment and Software / Do I really need to season an aluminum pot?
« on: March 05, 2014, 04:08:13 PM »
I picked up a winware 5 gallon pot so I could do some small batches indoors and it has instructions saying it should be seasoned to reduce the chance of discoloration.

Is that really necessary for homebrew use?

Ingredients / Re: looking for a good deal on bulk hops

The best place I've found is Hop Heaven from Ted Hausotter. Ted is very knowledgeable about what he sells and more importantly very nice and accommodating.

I can only find this store on eBay, does Ted have a website?

thanks

tom

Nope, he doesn't.

I bought from him late last year. Happy so far. The pound bags came double vacuum sealed.
