Ingredients / Aggies Researching Texas Malt-Grade Barley Strains
« on: April 12, 2013, 04:36:08 PM »

Proud to say that my Texas A&M Aggies are looking for a malt-grade barley strain that will grow in Texas.  In a state rich in brewing history, it would be great to finally be able to brew a TRULY local beer. :)

Yeast and Fermentation / Re: pitching on a yeast cake

Dumb question from a newb here, but if you pour wort on an existing cake, doesn't that mess with your sanitation?

Yeast and Fermentation / Yeast Starter for 1 Gallon Batch?
« on: March 08, 2013, 02:02:21 AM »
Hi guys, I'm going to be brewing a 1 gal. batch of Dead Ringer IPA (1.064) this weekend.  Anyone think I need a yeast starter, or can I pitch it dry?

General Homebrew Discussion / Re: Sanitizer in the Fermenter

I actually have an autosiphon, but it keeps losing the seal at the neck (the hose doesn't seal well to the cane).  Guess I need a new hose.  I did discover that it doesn't reach the bottom of my carboy, so that sort of sucks too.

@Moose - If I add yeast prior to bottling, won't I have problems blowing up the bottles?

General Homebrew Discussion / Sanitizer in the Fermenter
« on: February 09, 2013, 09:55:26 PM »
Ok, so I was racking to my secondary for the first time, and I primed my racking cane with sanitizer.  When I moved it into the fermenter, the siphon broke, releasing about a racking cane worth of sanitizer into the brew.  I went ahead and racked it anyhow, but has anyone had any issues with this? :-\

Beer Recipes / Recipe for extract+grain Belgian Golden
« on: January 01, 2013, 12:55:40 AM »
I'm looking to see if anyone has a good recipe for an extract-based Belgian Golden Ale - something similar to Duvel.  I've become obsessed with these, and figure I need to quit wasting money and brew my own.

I'd like to stay away from mash recipes, since brewing is something I have about 6 hours a month to do.

Any help would be great.  Thanks guys!

I personally like The Gingerman (both Plano and Dallas have locations).

Beer Travel / San Diego Mission Beach Area
« on: December 05, 2012, 05:29:57 PM »
Ok brewmen, I need to find a good brewery in the Mission Beach area of San Diego.  I'm going this weekend for a getaway, and I am in the need of some great (not just ok) beer.  I don't mind driving, but somewhere in walking distance of the hotel (like I said, Mission Beach) would be preferred!

General Homebrew Discussion / Re: Homebrew Store in Alabama Raided

To my friends in Alabama...I will raise a toast in your honor.

I guess I need to read up more on the history of homebrew legislation.  Seems to me that in states where it is restricted (or illegal), it's nothing more than modified prohibition.  Granted, the organized crime scene isn't going to create a need to repeal the laws, but still...

I also think that if the legislators pushing this actually had a few beers every once in a while, they'd be more cool.   8)

General Homebrew Discussion / Re: Newb Question - Original Gravity
« on: September 22, 2012, 01:07:36 PM »
I did one of those correction calculators and it came up to about 1.048.

Followup - at which point do I need to pop open the fermenter and take another reading if I don't see any activity in the air lock?

General Homebrew Discussion / Newb Question - Original Gravity
« on: September 21, 2012, 10:43:03 PM »
Alright, I just brewed my first batch.  It's a Red Ale.  The original gravity on the kit called for between 1.048-1.052.  I measured it at 1.046.  Is this going to kill the batch? :-\

General Homebrew Discussion / Fermentation Temp Control (Texas)
« on: August 27, 2012, 12:23:31 AM »
So I live in Texas.  My AC can't usually keep the house below 78, which means that I need some way to artificially cool the closet/box/whatever where I plan on fermenting.  Basically I'm afraid to start my first batch, because I don't want it to get ruined because of the stupid heat down here.  Any hints, suggestions, inventions?
