The club barrel project brewing will be a good chance to see what goes into making beer. We'll begin at 9:30am and brewing is expected to last past 1pm.

I became a judge because of multiple scoresheets with fewer than 50 words and unpredictable scores.  In every case (back then 4 years ago) one was a pro brewer and the other was new to judging beer.  Bad combination, especially for Cat 23 at NHC...  So, I took time off from entering beers, judged for a bit and learned what competitions were improving the judge pool and investing in treating judges well so the comments would be useful.

Compare beer judging to wine judging and you'll even appreciate the poor feedback.  As I understand it, if your wine has a flaw it doesn't score and you don't get feedback.

I'm with Martin on the need for an incentive for attracting judges to the NHC.  My favorite "compensation package" to date was a comped room for the Ohio State Fair last year.  To them it had no actual cost since they were earned rewards (like points) from putting up acts during the fair.  Hotel costs seem to fluctuate widely depending on the site and convention schedule.  And hotel rooms aren't as attractive to locals who can just go home. 

I really like the Indy site at Sun King.  I'm not sure why more BA members aren't using the opportunity to get their name out to the masses.  Even if they aren't an official sponsor, having 600 brewers send beer to your address, or stop by, has got to be good for a brand.  And I think that a tasting room provides and instant after-party.  Frankly, I'm surprised that this is not the norm.  Maybe the AHA/BA relationship needs to be leveraged more.  But our local brewery isn't showing interest in getting more involved in a small competition attached to beer festival which they are completely involved in.  If they did, the competition would be bigger, as would the festival.

I'm glad to hear that something is officially happening to get the entry test in place.  I think a lot of frustration comes from thinking that this logjam is going to be in place for the foreseeable future.

Well, Tom, at least they have an AHA discount, of sorts.  I don't like their beers generally or their business model (or that the local franchise didn't pay their rent for nearly a year) but they are one of very few breweries in this area that have any recognition of the BA/AHA relationship.  That deserves some respect.

What I'm wondering is how you fit all that wort in a refrigerator.

You could step out of the loop by offering the recipe and let them find a place to brew it.  Of the breweries in Indy, I don't know which ones would brew on contract, but there are probably one or two.

Hey, Drew.  Could you do a turbid mash instead of adding more food in the secondary?  I'm not sure what flavor changes it would cause, if any.  I'm just looking for a reason to do one...

But congrats on finding a way to drink on the job!  Are you going to have them work on the house indefinitely?   ;D

From the judge perspective, I've had a number of "Imperial Porters" which didn't rate very Imperial.  Just because the numbers say it's Imperial, it needs to be way over the top to be judged well.  Being a little over the top won't hurt it in 23 if it's not stated to be imperial.  So if the vanilla is balanced enough to seem like an oak or bourbon contribution, I'd leave it off the form, too.  A typical strategy on judging 23 is to tick through all the words on ingredient list and description and ask if it's there.  If it's borderline enough to be attributed to something else, it's better to make it seem like that "something else" is just that much cooler.

Last weekend, the BoS judges were confused at the announcement of the top prize.  It was a 13B Sweet Stout, but the beer name was Hazelnut Stout.  Turns out they used so little extract that it only contributed a nuttiness to complement the malt bill.  Had it been in 23, it would have flunked out.

23, I'd say.  But how "Imperial" is the porter?  If all the bigness (or the vanilla for that matter) could be attributed to bourbon, I'd leave it off the description.

My wife FINALLY ditched Navistar (after 15 years) and we're moving south instead of to Illinois.  She resigned on Monday and starts  April 11 at her new job.  So this down time before packing and unpacking might be the only chance to have a beer in the next couple months.

Someplace I follow on FB advertised that they're giving out green popcorn all day today in preparation for tomorrow.  I think it was a kid activity place (library, science museum, etc) so the thought came to mind of the mess that would make.  But you could clean it up by making a Green Popcorn Pils, ala Sun King.

The brewers I know would discuss recipes generally but probably not go through the trouble to give proportions.

I'm all for helping judges out.  It has (and will continue to) helped me decide what's worth the travel and time away from the family.

However, don't forget, Martin, that the Indiana Brewers' Cup is modeled after the wine competition.  My understanding is that BC still loses quite a bit of money at $10 an entry and 900 entries.  Only BJCP judges are compensated, as I understand, but pro brewers may get the stipend, too.  It's not considered a fund raiser.  I'm not sure many organizations would put on homebrew competitions if they knew they'd lose money, especially on this scale.

The Ohio State Fair has a different approach.  BJCP judges from outside a 35 mile radius are granted a comp room.  This is different in that they are part of the fair's inventory of room comps they get from putting up entertainers during the fair.  They have only a small value to the fair, but a huge value to out of town and out of state judges.  I would venture that the retail value of our room last year exceeded the stipend from the Indiana State Fair the weekend before.  And yet, it attracted fewer judges than Indiana.

I think organizers need to leverage their tourism boards in their localities more.  Cheaper rooms, more attractive family options and even just some planning beyond "Drink, Drink, Sleep" would go a long way.  That's what I've been working for up here, but I'm heading your way, Martin.  Maybe you'll see something pop up SE of you in a year or two...
