Beer Recipes / Re: Diabetic and Beer
« on: September 04, 2010, 09:32:31 AM »
My wife has been Type 1 Diabetic for 33 years and she is a homebrewer herself. Diabetics need to remember that when they drink Alcohol, this will cause their blood sugar to briefly drop before it starts to rise.

But, as stated above, To make a beer as easy as possible, brew a beer with little residual sugars. Also, use Beersmith or Promash as these programs will estimate that carbs in the beer you are brewing.

Beer Recipes / Porter vs. Stout
« on: September 04, 2010, 09:24:54 AM »
I'm trying to get an understanding of Stouts vs. Robust Porter. At what point does a Robust Porter Recipe become a Stout? Is it the amount of Roasted Barley used?

A question to anyone who got wort from the Lakefront Ralley. Does anyone know what the Starting Gravity was? I forgot to take a measurement.

That is high for a starter but you don't need to toss it. Just give your starter enouph time to do its thing.

You can't go wrong with Makers Mark.

Anyone try Red Stag yet? It's made my Jim Beam. A cherry infused bourbon. Add a little ice and you have a Manhattan.

I like manhattans but you forgot the vermuth and bitters

I was out of vermuth one day but I had some Red Stag. I added ice and it worked till I could get to the store.

Ingredients / Re: Is Maris Otter worth it?

One word......YES

MO malt is a great malt for all beer styles except Pilsner type styles. I use this for english style ales and american pale ales. MO gives a nice malty background to compliment the hops. After finding out how nice MO works for American Ales I stop using dimestic pale malt completely.

Kegging and Bottling / Re: Keg, bottle or both?

I almost always keg. Some styles like Hefes I prefer to bottle.

Other Fermentables / Re: Storing bottles on their side
« on: November 13, 2009, 07:51:53 AM »
For natural corks you should store them on their sides, you don't want the bottom of the cork to dry out.

For artificial corks (the rubbery type) you should store them upright. These corks I find have a tendancy to leak if stored on their sides.
