Do or don't. If you're thinking Styrian or Tettnanger, I wouldn't bother. I don't think you'll get enough out of it vs. the risk of oxidation and floaties. If you just want to use up some hops, go for it.

Speaking of not bothering - I wouldn't rack to secondary at all, let alone after only a week.

Also siding with homoeccentricus here: Belgian homebrewers are even more set (stuck) in their ways than Belgian commercial brewers.
They'll frown and make tssk tssk noises if you dare to add salt to a gose.
They'll throw a tantrum if you even contemplate not using sugar in whatever beer you're brewing.
Hissy fits ensue when you attempt to brew something that is not either a tripel, a dubbel, or a Duvel clone.

But at least they don't outright diss peated malt, so maybe we should count or blessings, hidden as they are beneath the curses.  8)

Question everything. Not just in brewing, but especially in brewing.  Thanks for that message.

Definitely pick up a copy of the Good Beer Guide Belgium.

For a trip like that, it's perfect. Pick some random town along the way, grab the book and find the best place for a beer. You'll find some interesting places with excellent beer, completely void of tourists.

Yes! Or even worse, just a difficult-to-navigate facebook page. A content-useful website should be pretty elementary these days.

It's the full show. It's a bit ridiculous, but there's some nice stuff to look at, especially if you've never been to Belgium. The competition bit starts around 38:45. And you're right. That is NOT Westmalle Tripel.

Are you going to split the batch? I would separate just enough for the competition, rush that bit and let the rest finish properly. At least then you're more likely to have some decent beer for yourself. That's the important part.

But to add to what unclebrazzie said, also not far from Struise and St. Sixtus is De Dolle Brouwers. They have my favorite brewery tour every Sunday at 2pm. Also in the same 'hood is the quaint little town of Veurne, which I think is underrated. There are a few good drinking spots in and around there as well.

There's no need to rush it. 2 weeks in the bottle is too young, in my opinion. I just won 1st place in a homebrew competition with an IPA that's been in the bottle for 6 weeks (there's still a bit of haze).

I didn't see that in this article. Spicy is there, but I think that ought to be fermentation rather than actual spices. The recipe doesn't call for spices, so thats how I took it.

Yes, that's how I took it, too, but I don't think that's clear. Some less experienced brewers might see it differently. I hope not. "Why in the world did you add Cinnamon to your beer?" "Because Drew said so!"

Interesting how old threads get revived.

I made a batch of soap with hops a while back. The hops oxidized and turn the soap brown and there was zero hops aroma (I used cascade pellets). The soap turned out fine and the hops made it nice and exfoliating, but otherwise it was a waste of hops. I think you would have to use concentrated oil to get some aroma.
