Yeast and Fermentation / The Beer Bug
« on: August 08, 2014, 01:40:08 AM »
Just came across this.  Does anyone have any experience with it?  At $250 it's a bit of an investment but looks pretty nice.

Yeast and Fermentation / Lager Temp
« on: December 03, 2013, 12:05:04 AM »
I’ve finally made the leap to better fermentation control with the use of a converted chest freezer.  I have my first lager fermenting away nicely and about ready to drop the temp for lagering.  How quick should I do this to get it down to the low 30’s?

General Homebrew Discussion / Hop Trellis
« on: October 30, 2012, 06:07:09 PM »
I had a successful summer growing 4 types of hops up and over my back yard pergola.  I have them planted at the post with ropes extending to the top support and then laid the rope horizontally in different directions over the pergola.  The vines needed a little help wrapping around the horizontal ropes but generally it worked very well.   The question I have is could I lay a wire metal grid (with about 6x6 openings) on top of the pergola and will the vines wrap around the metal with the wire being quite a bit smoother than rope?

Yeast and Fermentation / Fermentation temp control idea
« on: December 22, 2011, 03:55:28 AM »
I’m looking at some options to upgrade my brewing system to control fermentation temperature (besides the typical freezer/ref with thermostat).   Would it be possible to add a stainless steel heat exchanger directly in the fermenting beer and pump chilled/ice water through it and have the pump controlled by a thermostat?  Or is this a crazy idea?  Thanks in advance.

Kegging and Bottling / Keg to keg transfer
« on: June 23, 2011, 12:59:45 AM »
I recently got the OK to invest in a 2-1/2 gallon keg to bring to parties, etc. and I’m looking for some advice on how to fill it from one my 5 gallon kegs.

Thanks in advance.

All Grain Brewing / Mash/Lautering in the same pot?
« on: April 15, 2011, 02:28:55 AM »
I recently received a false bottom for my brew pot and was thinking of changing up my brewing system.  Can I simply use the false bottom in my pot for mashing (with some insulation wrap), let it sit and then continue to use it for lautering & sparging.  Short question, can the same pot be used for mash & lautering?  Any cons to this method?

Kegging and Bottling / Tap Maintenance
« on: December 22, 2010, 06:50:15 PM »
I’ve been using my newly built keggerator with excellent success so far.  The question I have is do I need to do anything with the taps between regular use (I have Perlick forward sealing)?  Believe it or not it may be up to a week before I pull a glass of beer off one of the taps.  Should I be squirting anything up in the faucet to keep it clean and sanitary between  pours?

Thanks for responses so far.  Any issue with using a spray bottle of vodka to keep the tap clean and sterile?
