I've been drying my hops in one for years. It works great and it's fast.

Fantastic thread.
Just too cool for words.

I remember my Grandma making soap in the backyard.  (And my Grandfather made beer and wine).
I may just have to try this out!
Thanks for the great info.

Yeah, very cool thread. I have a book about old fashioned crafts that includes soap making, but also how to make your own lye from wood fire ashes.

Yeast and Fermentation / Re: Harvesting wild yeast (but NOT brett!)
« on: May 27, 2011, 08:36:21 AM »
Sorry to get off topic, but...

So where did a brewery get it's yeast back in 1850 or so? Did they just use wild yeast over and over again for a few hundred years until it mutated into something that made good beer?

I am curious.

 ???

I think Golden Monkey was one of the first craft beers I ever drank. I remember being amazed at how good beer could taste after a lifetime of BMC.

All Things Food / Re: Kitchen Knives

I just use an old Cutco for almost everything and a poplar cutting board I made myself. Sharpening a knife yourself is not that hard,  as said above, the web is full of how to videos. There's a good one out there of a guy who sharpens his knife and then shaves off his beard with it.

$4.12 is the cheapest, but most places are around $4.25

Congrats. What kind of law are you going to go into?

If all the Alabama homebrewers were millionaires, and could donate large sums of money to every politician in the Alabama Legislature, the law would be changed right away.
